Recycle Your Bicycle

Bikes for the World will be collecting bicycles on May 19 in Severna Park and volunteers are needed.

Recycle your bicycle May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pedal Pushers in Severna Park when Bikes for the World will collect used, repairable or better bicycles and usable bike parts for donation to developing countries.

The event is being coordinated by volunteers Ann Jackson and Rod Reddish. Reddish owns the bike shop. Jackson said the two have organized the bike collection for five years, but took last year off.

About 45 to 60 bikes are collected each year, said Jackson. The Pedal Pushers staff help by marketing the event along with Deb Hoffman, owner of The Big Bean. Hoffman gives coffee certificates for those who donate a bike every year. Jackson belongs to the Baltimore Area Boardsailing Association, which provides a few volunteers each year.

Operating, portable sewing machines are also accepted. A donation of $10 is requested to help defray the cost of shipping. Bikes for the World ships the bicycles to its charity partners in developing countries.

The bicycle you donate could help someone get to work, school or health services. Contact Ann Jackson at 443-223-7236 or annjackson61@gmail.com for more information.
