Severna Park Resident Produces Sports Show

Comcast Sportsnet airing 12 episodes of recreational sports video, locally produced and starring Bob Heck, better known as "Bob the Vid Tech."

Hoping to bring the "best of youth sports" to television, Joe Stephens of Chartwell has partnered with former Maryland Public Television (MPT) personality Bob Heck, known as Bob the Vid Tech for a half hour of recreational sports coverage.

After the pair collaborated and brainstormed content ideas, they presented it to the executives at Comcast SportsNet who shot a pilot and signed "SportsKids with Coach Bob" on for 12 episodes. The first half hour show aired last weekend and featured youth lacrosse in Anne Arundel County, with the Chesapeake Bayhawks from major league lacrosse as their guest.

Three more shows "are in the can" and the fourth is in the works, said Stephens. The show airs at 9 a.m. on Comcast SportsNet and Verizon Fios channel 76/576HD on Saturday and Sundays. Future episodes will highlight teams, coaches and parents throughout the Maryland region.

Stephens, executive producer for StratDV Media, a video production company, has been involved with producing videos for a variety of clients, many corporate, for more than 10 years. A producer friend recommended he contact Heck, who is a little league coach in the Baltimore area and has a strong reputation locally in the cable channel industry.

The focus of the show is everything positive about youth league sports, spectator scuffles aren't on the storyboard. "It's all about lifting up and celebrating the local Green Hornets sports, parents and communities - what's best about youth sports," said Stephens.

The show will host sports mentors, and interviews with professional athletes "who want to share their perspective and insights on sports," said Stephens.

Describing the episodes as fast-paced and humorous, Stephens hopes the offbeat combination of elements will make it entertaining for local sports enthusiasts. They also plan to shoot actual games and practices and produce game day segments, through the quarters synopsis and cover playoff games.
