Play Ball: Green Hornets Hold Opening Day Ceremony

Hundreds of young baseball players are enthused about new season.

Green Hornets baseball hosted their annual Opening Day parade and festivities on Saturday with hundreds of kids, each in colorful uniforms, parading through Kinder Farm Park and posing for pictures with their homemade banners.

There were activities for the whole family including a pitch, hit, and run contest, moon bounces, and face painting.

A number of local merchants attended the event and the 11U and 13U select teams sold raffle tickets to support their teams. Anne Arundel County Police used their radar guns to measure the players’ throwing speed and issued speeding citations.

The Green Hornets offered their full line of spirit wear including their newest items, batting gloves and batting helmets.

This year marked the first opening day for the new Green Hornets baseball commissioner, Bill Voelp who takes over the reigns from long time Green Hornets baseball commissioner, Todd Frady who was was presented with a plaque honoring his many years of service and he threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his 11U select team catcher, Ryan Key.

The ceremony was held on the Green Hornets new turf field which will be used by both the club and select teams.  Voelp commented that he was excited to be participating in his first opening day as commissioner and that “I am looking forward to continuing the great tradition of Green Hornets baseball.”
