'Slow Down For Kids Safety' Campaign

Standing on a street corner in the community of Stewart's Landing, the Jr. Catholic Daughters of America make a statement about speeding in Severna Park.

Driving down Lower Magothy Beach Road past the community of Stewart's Landing on Saturday, drivers were met with a group of teens and two moms making a statement about driving safely.

The Jr. Catholic Daughter of the Americas Court #2350 were stationed at the first entrance to the community with attention-getting yellow smile balloons dangling in the air as they held signs declaring, "Slow Down for Kids Safety."

A shout-out to drivers to "slow down for safety" was attracting attention, and for those that stopped by to see what they were up to, a free cupcake was the prize.

"Our mission is to make people aware to slow down in their neighborhoods,"said Paula Care, adviser to the group.

After an hour on the Stewart's Landing corner, the group was heading up to Old Mill for another stand followed by lunch at Ledo's Pizza.

This weekend's effort was one of five service projects for the group that belongs to St. John the Evangelist Church in Severna Park. The three girls, Kieran O'Sullivan, 14, Angelique Care, 15, and Kaitlyn Stag, 12, are busy throughout the year with community-driven projects.

Paula Care and assistant Lori Stag, schedule outreach activities ranging from a blanket drive for the homeless to bake sales for the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Foundation. Their next project, Care said, is to take the girls to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Care said she hopes the "Slow Down for Kids Safety" will become a national effort every April through the Jr. Catholic Daughter of the Americas.
