Local teens organize benefit concert to support fellow teen stricken with rare cancer.

Submitted to Patch by Laura Pajerowski and Donna Gunning

Local teens hosted a benefit concert on June 17 at  Our Lady of the Fields Church Hall in Millersville to benefit a fellow teen fighting brain cancer.

All proceeds from the concert, featuring performances by three local bands and other musicians including 2009 Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands Champion, Brightview Avenue, were donated to the Courage for Courtney Fund in support of local Crofton resident, Courtney Quinn.

Fifteen-year-old Courtney was diagnosed almost a year ago with a severe and rare brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma.   Instead of attending football games and dances during her freshman year in high school, Courtney was undergoing brain surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and physical therapy.

The Courage for Courtney Fund was established to help defray the medical costs associated with her treatment.

Nearly 250 people attended the event and about $5,500 was raised to help Courtney and her family with their medical expenses. In addition to proceeds from ticket sales, concert organizers received donations from local businesses in support of the cause.

In addition to Brightview Avenue, Arundel High School alumna and Courtney’s cousin, Lauren Quinn, opened the show, followed by Severna Park residents, Adam Narimatsu and Adam Schoen, bass player for the local Severna Park group, Aww Yeah. Up and coming bands, Medora and A Face for Radio featured students and alumni from Archbishop Spalding and Mount St. Joseph high schools.  Brightview Avenue closed the concert.
