ReplyIt is a sad commentary that we have descended to the point where comment sections of pages such as this are used by some not for discussions of the merits of issues, but for the slinging of childish insults that are neither appropriate nor germane to the topic at hand. It is an equally sad commentary that such comments are, by virtue of being allowed to remain on pages such as this, deemed acceptable by those who operate these sites.

On the article Proposed Budget Includes Edgewater Elementary Study

ReplyJust to be clear, the $2.6 million in FY2016 in Superintendent Kevin Maxwell's proposed six-year Capital Improvement is funding both for a feasibility study and design for Edgewater Elementary. As the story states, the study looks at the five available options and the costs for each. When a feasibility study comes before the Board of Education, an option is chosen and design proceeds accordingly.
The County Council has final line-item authority in the capital budget. This is unlike the operating budget. The Council can pick and choose which items it wishes to fund. Funding for Edgewater's feasibiliy study and design was contained in the six-year plan in the FY2013 budget request submitted by the Board to the County, but not contained in the final six-year plan adopted by the Council.

ReplyThe state-rated capacity of all county schools is listed annually in the Educational Facilities Master Plan, which is presented to the Board each July. Those interested in can access the plan online at http://www.aacps.org/planning/facilitiesenroll.asp.
Click on the feeder system you wish to look at and the capacity will be listed in the chart on Page 3.

ReplyThe Board of Public Works approved money for school construction, which is included in the capital budget. It does not approve money for operating costs, such as the hiring of additional teachers.

Frank,
The line on that website you reference means there is a long-term sub in Ms. Thorne's class, not that Ms. Thorne was a long-term sub.
