Students in Anne Arundel County are learning personal finance skills with the help of a computer program.
Severna Park students are being introduced to computer technology earlier in life than ever before, and schools in Maryland are trying to teach kids how to afford the smartphones, laptops and flatscreen televisions they want, with lessons on personal finances. In 2010, the Maryland State Department of Education started requiring schools to start providing financial education, beginning in September 2011. Each jurisdiction in the state was tasked with implementing the un-funded requirements. Junior Achievement of Central Maryland (JACMD) has helped area schools meet this new requirement, and now students in Anne Arundel County are learning how to save and spend with the computer program JA Finance Park. The Severna Park Middle School show wrapped up on Saturday.
Schoolhouse Rock Live! at Severna Park Middle School finished up on Saturday night. The show that features popular school tunes and tells the story of first-year schoolteacher Michael, played by eighth-grader Michael Bateman. “A new teacher is stressing about how he is going to teach his students on his first day of school because he has never been a teacher before,” said student director Allison McClare said. “He turns on the TV to Schoolhouse Rock and imagines the characters are in his living room teaching him new ways to teach his kids.” More than 80 Severna Park Middle students were involved in the production and had been working on the show since January. After school hours, the halls at Severna Park Middle have been anything but quiet lately as students prepare for the opening of Schoolhouse Rock Live! The musical opens Friday night and student director Allison McClare has had a front row view of all the preparations. “I really like being able to see how the show comes together and being part of it is really fun,” McClare said. After donating a kidney to his brother, Dovell Johnson and his daughter are headed to Disney World.
Nearly five months after Severna Park Middle custodian Dovell Johnson donated a kidney to his brother he has made a full recovery. In fact, he is doing so well that he is headed to Disney World with his four-year-old daughter. “My brother called me one day and said, ‘We are going to Disney World,’” Johnson said. “I told him I didn’t have the money for that, and he said, ‘I didn’t ask you, I am telling you that you are going, and I am paying for you and your daughter.’” Johnson’s brother Rhondell Jones has many reasons to be thankful for his brother—the biggest reason perhaps is that Johnson saved Jones’ life. Don Thomas has been on four space shuttle missions and now works with the STEM program at Towson University.
In 8.5 minutes you can read an email, eat a sandwich or maybe run a mile. If you ask sixth-graders at Severna Park Middle what you can do in 8.5 minutes they’ll say you can get to space. On Thursday, four-time space traveler Don Thomas gave Severna Park Middle School sixth-graders a first-hand account of what it’s like to travel through space. “Lift off feels like someone has their hand at your back and is just pushing you off,” Thomas said. “Everything is just rocking and rolling for the first two minutes of the flight. It only takes 8.5 minutes to get in space—that was always amazing to me. I bet it takes you more than that to get to school in the morning."
