Holy Grounds Renovations Still Underway

The building was supposed to be finished on March 15, but repairs to the floors have caused some delays.

Those eager to get look at the remodeled Holy Grounds at the Severna Park Community Center have had to wait a little longer than expected. The $15,000 in renovations, being done by Home Depot, have been delayed due a variety of reasons and because the floor was in need of more work. “There was just so much that needed to be sanded and prepped and painted,” said Executive Director Jennie Boden. “The details around the very high windows were a lot of work.” Along with the painting, Home Depot is also sanding the floors and adding a light stain to make them look brighter and newer. Boden said this work should be completed by the end of next week. Do to the demand on Holy Grounds, a few events have been held in the building this week, but …

Home Depot Gives Holy Grounds $15K Makeover

Crews were hard at work Wednesday remodeling the Severna Park Community Center’s Holy Grounds building.

Home Depot workers and volunteers were hard at work Wednesday giving Holy Grounds the much-needed makeover it deserves. When Home Depot store manager Laura Gibson and her associates first heard about the Severna Park Community Center’s Holy Grounds, she knew it was project they had to be involved in. “We always look for community organizations we can help, and a lot of our associates are in the area. We didn’t have to twist any arms to get them out here to help,” Gibson said. “The building was a challenge, but it was right up our alley.” Home Depot is making about $15,000 worth of repairs and upgrades to Holy Grounds including a revamped kitchen, new paint and floor work. Crews started working on the project Tuesday morning and hope to …

Holy Grounds Ready for Home Depot Makeover

The Severna Park Community Center's youth building will get a complete remodel thanks to Home Depot.

When Severna Park Community Center Executive Director Jennie Boden first set out to spruce up Holy Grounds she was only looking to make a few enhancements to the kitchen area.   "I originally called Home Depot asking for help with the countertops and cabinets and right away they asked me to come down to talk,” Boden said. Boden arrived at the Home Depot in Glen Burnie for a meeting with a manager. After discussing what they wanted, the manager and his team paid an immediate visit to Holy Grounds—and inspiration struck. “They came down to see the space and just decided they needed to do a complete remodel,” Boden said. “The Home Depot staff took over in a beautiful way.” Thanks to Home Depot Heroes Days, Holy Grounds will get new paint, …

Report on County's Needs Shows Concern for Obesity

"Two-thirds of our county is either overweight or obese," the county's health officer said, but there are several ways to get fit in Severna Park.

A state of the county report based on focus group testing concluded that the county needs to address an increasing problem dealing with obesity.  Anne Arundel County's 2012 Needs Assessment Report, titled Poverty Amongst Plenty IV, was recently released by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. A summary of the report's findings shows that population growth in Anne Arundel County has slowed since the 1970s and 1980s, with only a 10 percent increase since 2000, and obesity is growing—29 percent of all adults are obese and 38 percent are overweight. When addressing the Anne Arundel County Council in October, Health Department Officer Dr. Angela M. Wakhweya urged it to lead by example and champion a "healthy weight, as well as your …
