Annual Triathlon Raises $4,000 for Emily Schindler Scholarship Fund

The Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon was held on Saturday at the Severna Park Community Center.

The seventh annual Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon held on Saturday raised more than $4,000 for the former SPY simmer’s scholarship fund. The triathlon is held every year at the Severna Park Community Center and Baltimore Annapolis trail to raise money for a scholarship fund in Emily’s name. Emily was killed in a car crash at Frostburg State University in 2004. The triathlon is orchestrated each year by fellow SPY swimmer David Ensor and Emily’s parents Jane and Charles Schindler. In an email, Ensor said that this year’s triathlon was the perfect balance of returning triathletes and new Emily Schindler Memorial Scholarship triathletes. SPY Swimmer Orchestrates Memorial Triathlon

The 7th Annual Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon will be held April 20 at the Severna Park Community Center.

For the past seven years, former SPY swimmer David Ensor has spent his time organizing a triathlon to honor a girl he never even met. During Ensor’s first year with SPY in 2004, Emily Schindler was killed in a car crash at Frostburg State University. “She passed away the first year I was on the team with her brother, Charlie,” Ensor said. “After she died we all went to Woods Church as a group. I just wanted to do something to carry on her legacy.” When Ensor heard that Emily’s parents Jane and Charles Schindler had started a scholarship in their daughter’s name, he decided a triathlon would be a good way to raise money. So, having never met Emily, Ensor created the Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon. “I really just thought it was a good …

If you walked into Holy Grounds this week you almost wouldn’t recognize it. Gone are the plain colors, the rundown kitchen, the dark wood and the old floor. In its place is a fresh coat of paint, new kitchen appliances and an overall space that looks rejuvenated. Thanks to Home Depot’s $15,000 worth of upgrades, Holy Grounds will be ready for full-use on Monday. “It feels like a different space,” said community center director Jennie Boden. “And the care that has been put into it is beyond measure.” With help from local volunteers, Home Depot gave Holy Grounds new paint, floors, cabinets and counter tops, in addition to a new refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and sink. Holy Grounds offers a home for summer camps, weight management …

Emily Schindler’s Spirit Lives On in Triathlon

The 7th Annual Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon will be held April 20 at the Severna Park Community Center.

Emily Schindler spent most of her life in the water. She joined SPY when she was 9 and filled most of her time swimming laps in the pool. When Emily was killed in a car crash in January 2004—during her freshman year at Frostburg State University—it seemed only fitting to her parents that they honor their daughter with a SPY scholarship given in her name. “Right after her death [my husband] was like this is how we honor her—she was a swimmer and this is what she would have wanted,” said Emily’s mom Jane Schindler. Each year, SPY swimmers compete in Winterfest at the University of Maryland, and during its inaugural year, Emily gave the devotion before the meet. Jane said listening to Emily talk about what swimming meant to her was very …
