Local Business Owners: 10 Reasons to Shop Local

After the recent closing of a local business, area business owners want to remind the community why it’s important to shop local.

After hearing the news that BJ’s Blings and Things would be closing its doors for good, one local business owner thought it would be a good opportunity to remind the community of the importance of shopping local.  Dawn Wilson, an owner of Side Street Framers in Severna Park, said she had no idea Blings and Things was closing and the news touched her personally. “It is so important for our local residents to support our small locally owned business, or we may see more have to close,” Wilson said.  “I don't think people always realize that where they chose to spend their money makes such a huge difference for these local businesses.” Wilson, who owns Side Street Framers with her mom, said she and Franklin’s Toys owner Jeff Franklin co-chair …

Photos: Christmas in the ‘Park

Here’s a look at photos from Friday’s tree lighting and Park Plaza festivities.

Despite some rain, many area residents came out to the Severna Park Chamber for the tree lighting and the festivities that followed at Park Plaza on Friday night. During the tree lighting, Severna Park Elementary sang a number of holiday songs and local girl scout troops provided cookies. Bruster’s was also there serving up samples of ice cream. The celebration continued in the Park Plaza shopping center as the Severna Park High jazz band and Folger McKinsey chorus performed, along with other local groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance. The pair rode in on a horse-drawn carriage and posed for pictures with children who had been lined up all night. Take a look at the photos from the Christmas festivities and be sure to add …

Local Schools Set to Perform at SP Christmas Celebration

The annual lighting of the tree and caroling in Park Plaza will commence on Friday night.

With the warm weather, it may not feel like Christmas outside, but the holiday season has arrived and the town of Severna Park is ready to celebrate. The annual lighting of the tree and caroling in Park Plaza will take place on Friday night. “Santa will be coming to town in a horse drawn carriage and we will have various performing groups from Anne Arundel County Schools singing carols and performing,” said Music and Arts manager Greg Bell. “It should be a good time and lots of fun.” Two local schools in particular will be participating in the festivities. Folger McKinsey will be singing in Park Plaza, while Severna Park Elementary will perform at the tree lighting ceremony in the parking lot of Severna Park Chamber of Commerce. “Folger …

Book Signing and Fourth of July Parade

Two Chamber events for the whole community to enjoy in June and July.

Events are a part of the Chamber’s mission.  We put together events for the community, to promote the community, and to promote the businesses we represent.  Some events are small and some are large.  One of the smaller ones coming up is our June 4 Local Authors Book Signing Event at Severna Park Library.  This is a partnership event with the Library, and it will run from 10 a.m. to noon that Saturday.  The idea came about because several members of the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce are talented authors, a few of many wonderful authors in the Greater Severna Park area.  When I approached the library with the idea, they suggested I work with a certain number of writers for this event, and we are featuring seven.  These talented …
