Falcon Field Hockey: Continuing the Legacy

After long-time coach Lil Shelton stepped down, the powerhouse Severna Park field hockey team looks to continue their dominating tradition.

At first glance, the practice field of the Severna Park High School field hockey team looks the same. Girls in pinnies are running around the field, sticks in hand, passing the ball back in forth—mastering the backhand and perfecting the simple art of passing. But if you look closer one thing is obviously different. Veteran coach Lil Shelton is nowhere to be found. And a new coach, Ann Andrews, stands in her place. After 37 seasons, 546 career wins, and 20 state titles, Shelton decided to retire—and Andrews stepped in. “It's a pretty easy transition because we have all been here before,” Andrews said. “The kids knew what to expect and we knew what we wanted to do. We sat and talked about any changes we wanted to make and all the things we …

Local 13-Year-Old Joins Fight Against Chiari

After being personally affected by the neurological disorder, Megan Killpatrick is organizing her second Conquer Chiari walk.

When some 13-year-olds get home from school they have a snack, maybe walk the dog and then probably watch TV. When Severna Park Middle School student Megan Killpatrick gets home she may do those things too—but she also tries to find corporate sponsors to help her in her fight to conquer Chiari. Megan was diagnosed with Chiari, a neurological disorder that affects 300,000 people in the U.S., when she was 7. “What happens is part of the brain comes out of your skull a little bit and it crowds up the back of you head and puts pressure on your spine and brain,” Megan said. “It causes pain and nerve damage.” Megan’s mom, Cheryl Killpatrick, said Megan was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was 7 and that eventually led to the diagnosis of Chiari…

Crash Causes Power Outages in SP Communities

Fire officials say the crash occurred on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard Monday afternoon and some residents lost power for almost six hours.

A car accident on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard Monday afternoon caused power outages in local communities, authorities said. Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Keith Hamilton said crews responded to the intersection of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard and Lower Magothy Bridge Road at 4:28 p.m. for the report of a crash. Hamilton said a car collided with a pole. "We requested help from BGE because there were dislodged wires as a result of the crash," Hamilton said. A resident of Stewart's Landing in Severna Park told Patch parts of the community lost power until after 10 p.m. Residents in Berrywood also lost power on Monday evening. "It did cause a power outage to about 900 people," said Rachael Lighty, a spokeswoman for BGE. "…

Thanks, Maribel! My husband and I thought it might be. We assumed the outage was caused by a crash because it was so sudden, and we could hear sirens in the distance after the power outage.   more ›

Train for a 5K With Spark Running

The Severna Park sporting goods store is offering a nine-week program to help locals train for a 5K.

Spark Running has a whole new idea of a 9 to 5 workday. The Severna Park sporting goods store is offering a nine-week program to help locals train for a 5K called "A New Kind of 9 to 5." “It is a program for people who are non-runners, or have been out of running a long time but want to get back into it,” said Caitlin Burman, store owner. “It is a friendly non-competitive atmosphere and we build up gradually to a full 5K.” This is the third session of A New Kind of 9 to 5, but the first time Spark Running has opened the program to men.  Burman said she had a few male customers as well as husbands of former participants ask to be included. The session will begin on Sept. 5, but Burman said she will accept registrations through Sept. 7. The …
