A lane on Route 2 northbound was closed Wednesday while crews worked on building a sidewalk.
Those traveling along Ritchie Highway in Severna Park may have noticed a lane closed today. The closure was so crews could add sidewalks along Route 2. Bob Rager, a spokesman for the State Highway Administration, said a group called Image Asphalt is putting in a new sidewalk along northbound Route 2 between McKinsey Road and Robinson Road. “The whole job is going to run probably into October,” Rager said. “The sidewalk we expect to be in place in about a week and a half. We want to put pedestrian access there since it is right around the shopping center.” Rager said the work will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and shouldn’t involve any night work. “The concrete should be down in a week and a half,” Rager said. “We are …
The Severna Park field hockey team scored on two corners to defeat Arundel 2-1 Tuesday night.
When the Severna Park varsity field hockey lost the first game of the season to Broadneck on Sept. 4, coach Ann Andrews said the team failed to score on—or even get shots off—on corner opportunities. The Falcons got their fair share of corners on Tuesday—18 total—and they certainly got their shots off. They just found the pads of the Arundel goalie Shannon Davis, who recorded 14 saves in the outing. After being tied 1-1 for most of the game, Severna Park finally found the goal on a corner with five minutes left in the game to take the lead. The Falcons defeated Arundel 2-1 Tuesday night in Severna Park. “This game we were at least getting our shots off,” Andrews said. “The problem with Broadneck is we weren’t even getting shots off. Here …
The Severna Park third-grade educator has taught in Haiti, West Africa and Luxembourg.
When Severna Park Elementary teacher Debbee Chiodi addresses foreign cultures and lands with her third-grade class, it'll be from first-hand experience. Chiodi spent the last few years teaching in Haiti, Luxembourg and Mali, West Africa. Despite what seems like an exotic itinerary, Chiodi described teaching and raising a family outside the United States as a “pretty normal life.” “It doesn’t seem that interesting to me because it is just my life,” said Chiodi, a mother of four. “My husband works for the State Dpartment and every two or three years we move to a different country. We like to travel. We get to see the world and get paid while doing it.” The traveling lifestyle may seem causal to Chiodi because from 10-years old to 17 she …

Members of the community remember where they were when they first heard about the tragic events on Sept. 11, 2001.
There are few things in the world that can make an entire nation stop and pause the way 9/11 can. Eleven years ago today, pretty much at the exact time I am writing this, a plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Each year, when the anniversary rolls around, echoes of, “Where were you?” can be heard in conversations with loved ones, in a classroom or with a stranger. It is the one day that seems to unite us all. I was in my seventh-grade English class. I remember everyone was really confused, someone came and knocked on our door and our teacher left the room for a few moments. She came back in crying, and shortly after that, my mom came and picked me up and took me home. In honor of the 11th anniversary, I asked …
Jennie Boden, the new Severna Park Community Center Executive Director, spent more than 20 years working for national nonprofits.
Jennie Boden left the large, nonprofits because she wanted to be part of a community—a few weeks into her new gig she says that is exactly what she found in Severna Park. The new Severna Park Community Center (SPCC) Director spent more than 20 years working for nonprofits at the national level. On Aug. 27, she took over as executive director for the center. “I have worked at a national sector for over 20 years but there is something about wanting to make life better for neighbors and friends that is special to me,” Boden said. The SPCC consists of two pools, a recreation pool and a heated therapy pool. The aquatics section used to be managed by another organization but the center recently acquired the entire aquatics department, which led …
