On Monday crews were working at the intersection of Ritchie Highway and McKinsey Road.
An effort to increase pedestrian safety along Ritchie Highway was continuing to cause traffic delays Monday morning. If you have been driving up Ritchie Highway lately you may have noticed orange cones and construction crews. That scene continued on Monday as workers install sidewalks and pedestrian signals along Route 2. As of Monday morning, crews had cones set up and a lane closed on McKinsey Road at Ritchie Highway. Drivers turning onto McKinsey from Route 2 drove into a makeshift lane created by cones, which was causing delays. In September, Patch reported that the State highway Administration said they were installing the sidewalks along Ritchie Highway and putting in a pedestrian signal at the corner of McKinsey and Route 2 and …

A lane on Route 2 northbound was closed Wednesday while crews worked on building a sidewalk.
Those traveling along Ritchie Highway in Severna Park may have noticed a lane closed today. The closure was so crews could add sidewalks along Route 2. Bob Rager, a spokesman for the State Highway Administration, said a group called Image Asphalt is putting in a new sidewalk along northbound Route 2 between McKinsey Road and Robinson Road. “The whole job is going to run probably into October,” Rager said. “The sidewalk we expect to be in place in about a week and a half. We want to put pedestrian access there since it is right around the shopping center.” Rager said the work will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and shouldn’t involve any night work. “The concrete should be down in a week and a half,” Rager said. “We are …

State officials discuss preparations for the heavy winter storm.
A tricky mix of rain, sleet and snow kept state officials guessing the best way to treat roads Wednesday, but crews will be out in force to make sure roads are clear for Thursday’s commute. “This storm has been unpredictable as in how and when it would start,” Gov. Martin J. O’Malley said during the briefing with State Highway Administration officials. Roads were slick Wednesday as rain prevented pre-treating surfaces. “[Salt] doesn’t work when you have rain like this,” O’Malley said. Salt was put down on the roads Wednesday morning, but the rain washed it away, SHA Administrator Neil Pedersen said. “The challenge,” he said, “is the timing of this [storm].” Snowplows went to work about the same time as Wednesday’s evening rush hour, when …

A State Highway Administration spokesman offers tips on dealing with icy road conditions and poor weather.
Spring will one day be on its way, but for now the area is still trapped in winter's icy grasp. Bouts of freezing rain and snow may still be coming to the area, especially given a major East Coast storm that may be showing up in the coming week. Patch caught up with Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) spokesman David Buck who offered some tips for dealing with snowy conditions. "Some would argue that getting any sleet and freezing rain is every bit as challenging as getting large amounts of snow," said Buck. "In some ways, it is." Buck said that dealing with icy roads is very different from dealing with snow. "You can't just tell people to take it slow on ice and they can get around reasonably well like with snow," said Buck. "With…
