From now until Dec. 5 The Big Bean will collect cards to send to soldiers.
The Big Bean in Severna Park is once again participating in the Holidays for Heroes program, which sends cards to soldiers recovering in hospitals and overseas. “We just asked our customers to give a little bit of their time and creativity rather than ask for money to touch someone who may need it,” said The Big Bean owner Deb Hoffman. This is the fifth year the local coffee shop has participated in the program. Last year, with help from a local Brownie troop, they were able to ship around 100 cards. Over the years, people have brought in unused Christmas cards and donated them to The Big Bean’s collection. “We have a lot of cards now and we just need people to stop in a write a note,” Hoffman said. The restaurant formally known as Rodz n Rydz has undergone renovations and presents a brand new atmosphere.
For those of you familiar with the former Rodz n Rydz, if you were to walk into the newly renamed Taphouse you would be quite surprised. Gone are the pool tables, foosball tables and the lingering smell of a night of drinking gone astray. Instead there are tables, chairs, a fireplace and an outside seating area perfect for kids. If you were to ask Taphouse’s three managers, Geoff Freitag, William Howard and Chris Rigney, why they made such a drastic change they would be perfectly honest and candid in their response. “To get people in the door,” Howard said. “Before people thought it was a biker bar and that kept the local clientele away.” Taphouse now offers a family-friendly atmosphere—complete with a fenced-in backyard seating for kids …

Thanks to help from Clement Hardware in Severna Park, Belvedere Elementary School was able to take supplies to New Jersey to aid Sandy victims.
After Hurricane Sandy, Belvedere Elementary teacher Kaitlin Paul decided to collect supplies and take them to her hometown of Toms River, NJ. Paul informed the staff at Belvedere of what she was doing and asked for their help—the response was overwhelming. "I sent out an email to my friends in Baltimore and I asked my principal if I could send it to the staff," Paul said. "I only had two days to collect stuff because I was leaving on Friday after work. I didn’t expect that much. But people at home brought stuff to my house and filled up my kitchen and people at work brought two bags each and I couldn’t fit it all in my car." In just 24 hours, Paul and the staff at Belvedere pulled together enough clothing, dry goods, and toiletries to fill…
