The Severna Park volleyball team defeated South River in four sets and advanced to the region championship.
When the Severna Park volleyball team entered this season, the girls had one goal in mind: a state title. The Falcons moved one step closer to that goal Wednesday night when they defeated South River in four sets—25-17, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18—to advance to the region championship game. After falling to South River in four sets during the regular season, the playoff matchup certainly wasn’t a given for the Falcons. Here’s a recap on what’s going on with Severna Park High School sports teams involved in postseason play.
Between Hurricane Sandy and the upcoming election, news of local athletics has gotten a little lost. So for those of you wondering how the Falcons are doing, here’s a recap on where some teams stand in postseason play. Volleyball After receiving a No. 2 seed, the Falcon volleyball team earned a first-round bye in the MPSSAA playoffs. Severna Park will host Old Mill on Monday night at 6 p.m. The Falcons have just two losses on the season, but both of them came to Arundel. Boys Soccer The Falcons finished the regular season with an undefeated record only to fall to North County in the County Championships. However, it seems the team was able to put that loss behind it. The team swept Severna Park on Thursday to win the county title.
The Arundel High volleyball completed a perfect regular season Thursday with a sweep of Severna Park, and will now begin its quest for a third straight regional crown. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and fended off several Falcon rallies for a 3-0 victory and the Anne Arundel County championship. The team will now await the announcement of the bracket for the MPSSAA state championship. Last year, Arundel fell in the state title game. In 2010, it lost in the state semifinal. Arundel coach Ashley Yuscavage downplayed the significance of the perfect record, knowing that the team has its sights set on the big prize. "Everyone goes into the playoffs with a clean slate. The team will play a key match against Arundel and raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.
The Severna Park volleyball team will do their part in spiking breast cancer Thursday, as they travel to Arundel for the annual "Dig Pink" game. The teams will wear pink, and proceeds and donations from the games will go to support the Side Out Foundation, which raises money for cancer research. It's also a key game for the two squads. Arundel remains undefeated, and the Falcons suffered their first loss of the season on Oct. 17 at South River. The junior varsity match starts at 5 p.m. at the Arundel High gym, with the varsity match to follow.

To help make your week easier, Patch compiled a list of things you need to know for the upcoming week. 1. The Weather It is going to be a warm week for October. According to The Weather Channel, after a cooler Monday, temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will reach the upper 70s. Things should cool off some towards the end of the week with Thursday and Friday's temperatures hovering in the lower 70s. 2. Enter Patch's Halloween Contest Adults and children are eligible to enter Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest. Parents can post costume photos of themselves and their families from this Halloween or from years past. The contest runs until Nov. 1. Severna Park Patch: What is your favorite Severna Park volleyball memory? Abbie Hoekstra: My sophomore year we were playing Bryn Mawr and they weren’t that good but we lost to them in five games. We did not play well at all. The next morning our coach made us be on the field at 5 a.m. to run sprints. At first we hated it and didn’t want to be there. But by the end it was really inspiring because we were running into the sunrise and we were chanting. And we knew we were going to get through the rest of the season together. The volleyball team defeated Annapolis in three games Tuesday night to remain undefeated.
Severna Park High School sports teams are finishing the season strong. The volleyball team, along with girls and boys soccer defeated Annapolis Monday night. Volleyball The Falcon volleyball squad took another step towards an undefeated season with a dominating three-game victory over Annapolis 25-3, 25-3, 25-7. The team will take on South River on Wednesday night. But looking ahead, the Falcons last game of the season will come against Arundel, which is also currently undefeated. If both teams continue their domination it could set up a potential showdown between the two undefeated teams as they battle for first place in the county. Severna Park Patch: What is your favorite Severna Park volleyball memory? Kimberly Bell: Sophomore year we were playing South River for the county championship. My sister was on the team we were all really nervous. We knew we could beat them because we already beat Arundel and they were undefeated. We play best three out of five and we lost the first two games pretty badly and were shaken up. But then we won the third and fourth games.
