It’s common to find Sports Illustrated magazines filled with your favorite professional athletes or well-known college players. However, last week’s copy of the sports magazine featured a familiar face for Severna Park residents—Severna Park High School junior Maeve Doherty. Doherty, a defensive player on the Falcon field hockey team, was recognized in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd Section,” which highlights outstanding high school athletes. Sports Illustrated wrote the following about Doherty: Maeve, a junior defenseman at Severna Park High, was named All-State in helping the Falcons reach the state regional final for the second straight season, allowing only 13 goals in 16 games. Last year she scored the first goal in the …

Severna Park field hockey entered the 2012 season as the defending 4A state champions, but fell to South River in the playoffs. Do you know any of the SPHS first-team All-State members? At the end of the season last year, the Severna Park field hockey team stood on the field at Washington College in Chestertown, MD, on top of the world—victorious over Bethesda-Chevy Chase in the Maryland 4A state championship. Coach Lil Shelton had just earned her 20th state championship and the programs 20th—a state record. The Falcons finished the season 17-2 earning their eighth title in the last 11 years. About a year later, the Falcons enter the playoffs with a record of 10-3, but without Shelton. The team will start postseason action on Thursday when the Falcons take on Arundel in Severna Park, but it is Ann Andrews who will lead the way. “I’m nervous; it has been one of those season too, because all the teams are strong and …

For the past three years, the Severna Park and Annapolis field hockey teams have come together in October to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The field on Monday night at Annapolis High was dominated by pink accessories—and by the Falcons, who easily handled Annapolis with a 4-2 win. Players for both teams wore pink hair bows and shin guard covers with pink ribbons on them. This year's fundraiser included a silent auction of items valued more than $100, pink breast cancer awareness bracelets and more. The game itself was virtually one-sided in favor of Severna Park, who, with the win, improved to 10-2 on the season. Severna Park, Broadneck and South River have dominated field hockey throughout the county in past years. The …
