Baseball: Falcons Edge Arundel 1-0

A sacrifice fly in the sixth inning was the only run in the well-pitched game Thursday afternoon.

It was a game that could have gone all day without a runner crossing the plate. Stingy pitching and defense were the theme of the game Wednesday, as Severna Park edged Arundel 1-0. The teams' bats were not nearly as hot as the game time temperature, as the lone run came on a sacrifice fly by Severna Park's Tom Weyand in the sixth inning.  Severna Park pitcher Reid Kowalski was stellar, giving up just four hits on the day. Arundel's Cooper Hibbs matched him toe-to-toe, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out four.  "I knew Cooper was a good pitcher and I knew there was a good chance that'd be how the game [would go]," Kowlaski said.  The defenses for both teams also helped. Severna Park picked off two Arundel runners, while …

Boys Basketball: Broadneck Sneaks Past Severna Park

The Severna Park High boys basketball team fell to Broadneck 51-46 Tuesday afternoon.

Despite a very closely contested game in which no team led by more than six points, the Severna Park High boys basketball team fell to rival Broadneck 51-46 Tuesday afternoon in Annapolis.  The game was back and forth for much of the contest. Broadneck executed a high-pressure press, which the Falcons easily handled. And Severna Park tried to take advantage of a height advantage inside. “We have handled pressure pretty well all year—both zone and man,” said Falcon head coach Paul Pellicani. “That has been one of our consistent points this year.” The Falcons were led in the first half by a strong offensive outing from Taylor Kitamiller and took a one-point half time lead 21-20. Severna Park tried to force the ball inside more in the second …

BASKETBALL: Falcons Fall to Undefeated Arundel

The Severna Park High School boys basketball team fell to the Arundel Wildcats 61-50 Monday night.

The Severna Park High boys basketball team fell to county foe Arundel 61-50 Monday night. However, the Falcons were led by Taylor Kitzmiller's 24-point performance. Kitzmiller led all scorers and drained five three-pointers in the matchup but it wasn't enough as the Falcons came up short against Arundel. Senior Wildcat guard Austin Carroll led Arundel with 18 points on the night. The Wildcats used a strong inside game and stingy defense to outlast Severna Park and move to 9-1 on the season. Arundel is now 5-0 against county opponents.  Arundel led 14-7 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 14 midway through the third quarter. Severna Park rallied to cut the lead to 8, but Arundel grabbed momentum back in the waning minutes of …

Girls Basketball: Falcons Focusing on Defense, Striving for Wins

After spending four years at the JV level, Severna Park High grad Lisa Magness enters her first year as a varsity head coach.

The Severna Park High School girls basketball team tipped off its season on Thursday night with a matchup against St. Mary’s High School. After finishing the season last year with a 9-15 record, this year’s squad, led by first-year varsity coach Lisa Magness, is focusing on defense and hoping that leads to victories. “We are going with a defensive minded game plan this year,” Magness said. “We are going to change it up and run as many defenses as we can so other teams are caught off guard by not knowing what we are going to run.” Magness also said this year’s team is much quicker than years past, which she plans to utilize with an aggressive press. She said they are planning to use that as much as possible. The team’s recent addition of …
