Severna Park Elementary School is hosting a Carrabba’s Night and silent auction on April 30 to raise money for technology supplies and school equipment. The evening will offer a night off from cooking for local families and Carrabba’s will provide Caesar salad, chicken marsala and penne pasta with tomato sauce. The school will also host a silent auction. Severna Park Elementary will auction off fresh cakes made by teachers, student artwork, and “fun services”, such as lunch with the principal. The dinner and auction will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the cost is $10 for adults and $6 for students and children under 12. The school is looking for items that can be donated for the silent auction, as well as volunteers to bring dessert. Anyone …

Students at Severna Park Elementary showed off their science projects at a fair on Thursday.
Severna Park Elementary fifth-graders have been busy learning which fruit creates the strongest battery, what golf balls soar the farthest and what potato contains the most starch—all in the name of science. The school hosted its fourth annual science fair on Friday and students shared posters and results of various projects. The projects were completed entirely at home and the fair gave the students an opportunity to share what they have learned. Fifth-grader Jake Powell did his project on golf balls as he tried to determine if more expensive balls soared father than cheaper ones. He found that the cheaper Top Flight balls went the farthest, but discovered there were some inconsistencies in his method. “I found that I needed a robot to …

A group of 52 Anne Arundel County teachers will be honored at the 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet in April.
Seventeen Anne Arundel County public educators and four private school teachers have been named semifinalists for the 2013 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year award. Of the educators nominated, five are elementary school teachers, six teach at the middle school level, five teach at the high school level, and one teaches at a special school. Furthermore, ten of the county’s 12 high school clusters are represented by semifinalists. Here’s a look at photos from Friday’s tree lighting and Park Plaza festivities.
Despite some rain, many area residents came out to the Severna Park Chamber for the tree lighting and the festivities that followed at Park Plaza on Friday night. During the tree lighting, Severna Park Elementary sang a number of holiday songs and local girl scout troops provided cookies. Bruster’s was also there serving up samples of ice cream. The celebration continued in the Park Plaza shopping center as the Severna Park High jazz band and Folger McKinsey chorus performed, along with other local groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance. The pair rode in on a horse-drawn carriage and posed for pictures with children who had been lined up all night. With the warm weather, it may not feel like Christmas outside, but the holiday season has arrived and the town of Severna Park is ready to celebrate. The annual lighting of the tree and caroling in Park Plaza will take place on Friday night. “Santa will be coming to town in a horse drawn carriage and we will have various performing groups from Anne Arundel County Schools singing carols and performing,” said Music and Arts manager Greg Bell. “It should be a good time and lots of fun.” Two local schools in particular will be participating in the festivities. Severna Park Elementary School celebrated its 160th year in existence and 75th year in the building with an assembly Monday morning. The celebration featured students, teachers and administrators of the past and present, along with local politicians and Anne Arundel County school district superintendent Kevin Maxwell.
