The Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon on April 20 is just one Severna Park event you’ll want to check out this month.

Chesapeake Academy Merging with Severn School

The new school will offer preschool through 12th grade classes to nearly 800 students, becoming the largest independent school in Anne Arundel County.

The Severn School in Severna Park and the Chesapeake Academy in Arnold have signed an agreement to merge into one school over the summer, according to a release. The Severn School's Board of Trustees made the announcement Wednesday, saying the school will be able to retain its name, and extend its grade offerings from preschool through 12th grade. The Chesapeake Academy will be renamed to the Severn School Chesapeake Campus. “We’ve long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with Chesapeake Academy, welcoming students into our Middle School and sharing a reciprocal faculty tuition remission,” said Severn School Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “While the idea of joining forces with Chesapeake Academy is not new, the timing now is ideal.” The …

Severn School Tackles Adolescent Stress in Forum

The school is looking to provide parents with the tools they need to spot, and cope with their student’s stress.

Severn School is hosting a parent forum Wednesday to address issues of adolescent stress. The seminar will help parents identify stress and offer tips for managing the pressure their children feel. “The parent forum titled Adolescent Stress and Anxiety is aimed at providing parents the support they need to manage relevant issues in the lives of their children,” said Severn middle school guidance counselor Mary Foard. Gail Lewis, a psychiatric nurse practitioner will be the guest speaker for the forum. Lewis has been working in the Severna Park community for more than 20 years and has two children who went to Severn. Foard said offering parent support is a vital component of the educational program at Severn School. She also said that …

Last Chance: Vertical Horizon’s Matt Scannell at Severn School

Tickets to the event are sold out, but there will be an opportunity for walk-up seats.

Severn School will host a concert with Vertical Horizon’s founding member Matt Scannell Friday night as part of its launch of the Dillon Moran Musician in Residence Program. Tickets for the event are sold out, but there will be an opportunity for walk-up seating. Severn School Director of Communications Kristyn Kuhn said they have had some cancellations and will allow additional people into the concert on a first-come, first-serve basis. Kuhn recommends that those without a ticket arrive to the school around 6 p.m. They will enter through a different door and be admitted based on arrival time. “I have received emails about cancellations so I know there are going to be open seats. Severn School Headmaster Offers Tips for Coping with Tragedy

The headmaster provided tips from Dr. Robert Evans, a clinical and school psychologist.

In the wake of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, the Severn School is providing some tips for talking with children about tragedies. “In the face of such a tragedy, we not only think of those who are immediately impacted by the terrible event, but also wonder how to address such atrocities with our own children as they work through the emotions that are brought forth in them,” wrote Doug Lagarde, Severn School Headmaster, in an email. In order to help parents talk with their children about the tragic events, Lagarde offered an article written by Dr. Robert Evans, a clinical and school psychologist. Lagarde said Evans offers practical advice for dealing with difficult and tragic situations that may alarm children. …

Concussions: Throw Out Everything You Thought You Knew

The Severn School is holding a discussion on concussions and the school's new approach to dealing with them.

If you think a concussion is something only NFL football players need to worry about, Severn School wants to let you know you’re wrong. In the last year, Severn School, a private school for grades 6 through 12  in Severna Park, has drastically changed the way it handles concussions. The school has assembled a team that includes athletic trainers, a nurse, an administrator and a learning specialist to work with students who experience concussions. On Thursday night at 7 p.m., the school's concussion team is hosting a concussion management seminar to  educate parents on brain injuries and the school's protocols. “We are letting people know there’s no such thing as a mild concussion. Mike Dennin is a senior tight end for the Severn School's football team.

Patch stopped by Severn School’s football practice and talked to senior defensive tackle Mike Dennin about football, school and his plans for the future. Severna Park Patch: What is your fondest Severn football memory? Mike Dennin: I think the beginning of this season. Unfortunately, I got injured last year during the first game and missed the season. Sophomore year we got blown out by every team, but this year, to start off as well as we have, it means a lot to the school and the football program.
