Pro-Gun Protesters Rally Outside Maryland State House

Hundreds gather on the day Gov. Martin O'Malley testifies in favor of gun legislation he proposed earlier this year.

By Rashee Raj Kumar Capital News Service Hundreds of gun rights advocates rallied outside the State House Wednesday in opposition to new gun control measures proposed by Gov. Martin O’Malley. As O’Malley testified in favor of new gun restrictions before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, protesters outside said his proposals to ban assault weapons, limit magazine sizes and strengthen licensing measures would erode their rights. Jay Hanlon, a retiree from Silver Spring, held a sign arguing that the Second Amendment protected gun ownership, including assault weapons, as a check against “Domestic Enemies.” “That’s the weapon we need to defend ourselves against a government gone bad—against our oppressors,” said Hanlon, 65. Sound Off: Thoughts on Gun Control

One Severna Park Patch blogger shared his opinions on gun control and asked others for their thoughts.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT politicians, teachers, journalists and area residents began discussing gun control. The shooting killed 26 people, including 20 children, and left many people asking for gun control reform. Last week, a Severna Park blogger and gun owner shared his opinion on gun control on Patch. "There really aren't any good reasons to have a large capacity magazine and I look forward to someone trying to state a good and legitimate reason for a large capacity," Chet Brewer wrote in his blog. Brewer wrote that he has always kept a weapon around the house. He said he "reluctantly" unloaded it after he had children, but still keeps in inside the home. Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County.
