David Harmon, from Severna Park was recently named Archbishop Spalding’s Athlete of the Month.
Severna Park native and SPY swimmer David Harmon was recently named Archbishop Spalding’s Athlete of the Month. According to the Archbishop Spalding Facebook page, Harmon excels in the pool as well as in the classroom. He juggles five AP courses while remaining one of the top swimmers in the state. He also volunteers his time in the community. Harmon, who will be headed to Dartmouth College in the fall, recently competed in Winter Junior National Championship at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During the event, Harmon swam in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly, 500-meter freestyle. The annual swim meet will be held Jan. 11-13 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
More than 1,500 swimmers are getting ready to compete in SPY Swimming’s 11th Annual Maryland Winterfest Invitational. This year’s event will be held Jan. 11-13 at the University of Maryland. “Winterfest is the largest age group YMCA meet in the country,” said Meet Director Carole Parker. “We have 45 teams coming, and we have 1,531 swimmers. It’s a huge event.” SPY swimming hosts the event in College Park every year and 197 swimmers from Anne Arundel County will compete against participants from eight states. The invitational will feature swimmers ages 9-18 from New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland and Virginia. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids to swim in that kind of venue,” Parker said…

The morning after the YMCA Swimming Nationals, SPY swimmer David Harmon looked up the qualifying national times on his phone so that he would know what to shoot for next year. Little did he know, his time qualified for the Winter Junior National Championship. “The morning after finals I woke up early and was looking at the cut times on my phone as motivation for next time,” Harmon said. “I was looking at the times and was like ‘wait I got that one. And I got the bonus cut from the day before—I qualified.’” Harmon was so excited he had to share the news with his roommate, despite the early hour. “I woke up my roommate and was like, ‘Sam I just made Junior Nationals.’ He was like 'good for you I am going back to bed,'” Harmon laughed. Katie Parker, a junior at Severna Park High School, qualified for the Winter Junior National Championship held in Tennessee.
When SPY swimmer Katie Parker found out she qualified for the Winter Junior National Swimming Championship, she squealed with delight. “When my coach pulled up the times and I saw I made the cut I was so excited,” Parker said. “I squealed like a little girl and then ran over to text my mom who was sitting in the stands.” Parker, 16, is a junior at Severna Park High School and has been swimming since she was in fourth grade. On Dec. 6-8, she will swim in the Junior National Championship, which is being held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Wow! I was a 1981 graduate of SPHS and was a swimmer for SPY as well. In fact, I was on the very first SPY swimteam when it was founded back in 1976. I also swam breastroke and IM. Ken Barsa was the head coach and I believe he didn't retire until 2004. I moved away from Severna Park to Kentucky over 20 years ago, but I read the SP Patch often.
