According the SPAN newsletter, a farewell luncheon for Laukhart was held at the Cafe Mezzanotte complete with a goodbye song written by SPAN volunteer Sylvia Marston. Firefighters Deliver Easter Baskets to SPAN

Anne Arundel County professional firefighters donated meals and Easter baskets to families in need through Serving People Across Neighborhoods on Monday.

There was a fire truck parked behind Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) on Monday, just before lunchtime. Professional county firefighters and battalion chiefs donated their time and money to provide food and Easter baskets to help county families in need through SPAN. Organized by Lisa Mayers, battalion chief, this is the first time the county Professional Firefighters Association and the Battalion Chief Association have done a drive for SPAN. "We had an overwhelming response," said Mayers of the donations. "Some donated food, others shopped, some donated money," she said. A total of 32 Easter baskets were compiled and 25 full family meals were provided. They will be picked up by the families this week at SPAN, located next to Our…

SPAN Holiday Packages Help Needy

Serving People Across Neighborhoods distributed gifts and all the trimmings for a meal on Tuesday and reported a record number of sponsors.

The generosity of the community was received with a look of relief by many of the people who came to pick up their Christmas gifts and fixings for a holiday meal on Tuesday at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. By the end of the week, about 150 individuals and families in need of assistance may have a more enjoyable Christmas, thanks to Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN). Close to 20 volunteers helped organize and distribute the holiday packages to the recipients, including single mom Jamie Perry who now has presents for her 3-year-old son Evan. "This [SPAN] makes Christmas possible. It is amazing and gives me incentive to feel better," said Perry, whose mother died last year. The network of sponsors doubled this year to record numbers…

Brownie Troop Trick or Treats for SPAN, Delivers Donations to Severna Park Food Pantry

Chesapeake Academy Brownie Troop 5249 collected canned goods for SPAN in nearby communities on Halloween. The girls personally delivered the donations to the food pantry in need of extra supplies this time of year.

Brownies took to the streets on Halloween in search of treats for themselves and food donations for Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) in Severna Park.  A win-win situation for all, the girls really got into the spirit of giving while at the same time getting. Toting the bags brimming with canned goods was hard work, accomplished with pride and many smiles. "It was exciting to see young people embrace the fellowship of caring and giving at a young age," said troop leader Trudy Pastine.  All 20 girls, first through third grade, spread the word beforehand in their individual neighborhoods and came up with the plan to work toward a community service badge while having some fun.  The Millersville neighborhood of Brittingham's generous …

Fishpaw's Wine Tasting to Benefit SPAN

Wine lovers turn out to sip wines, learn about new sellers and talk about flavor - for a good cause.

The "Wine to Warm the Heart" to benefit Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) brought in many local wine connoisseurs interested in sipping a sample of the 100 wines at the tasting hosted by Fishpaws Marketplace on Thursday evening. SPAN is an emergency assistance network for families in crisis throughout Anne Arundel County. The fundraiser held at Homestead Gardens and Zachary's Jewelry in Severna Park, was the first of its kind for SPAN said Maria DeNardo, executive director. "Anne Arundel County is a very giving community and I want to say 'thank you' to Kim Lawson of Fishpaws for putting this together for us."

Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) News

SPAN will be collecting nonperishable food at the Fourth of July parade.

Submitted by SPAN: Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) friends and family gathered together recently to celebrate the 21st anniversary of SPAN and recognize our volunteers. For years, SPAN has been able to help others because of the outstanding support we have in our communities. Our volunteers, from the Board of Directors to the interviewers and pantry workers, donors and special programs volunteers, and without them, SPAN would not be able to keep our door open and help our neighbors in need. Our volunteers are reassuring and nurturing and work extensively to get a full understanding of the client’s problem.  Every day SPAN volunteers deal with many unique and sometimes overwhelming challenges, but they never falter, they never …

Give 5 Day at Serving People Across Neighborhoods

Patch editors volunteer for a few hours at a local nonprofit- this Patch helped stock shelves at food pantry.

Patch serves the Severna Park community by providing local news and information. Yet, the company also believes in "giving back" to the community so each Patch employee does volunteer work five days a year as part of the "Give 5" program. On Thursday, this Patch editor volunteered for a few hours in the food pantry at Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN), located behind Our Shepherd Lutheran Church at 400 Benfield Road. There in the small basement lined with shelved canned goods were three SPAN volunteers, Karen Myers, Jennifer Wade and Judy Robinson. These three are longtime volunteers in the pantry; making sure the cans of beans, fruit, tomato sauce, tuna, peanut butter, jars of jelly many other food staples are organized for easy …

SPAN Receives Gift of Over $4K

A walk-a-thon at Severn River Middle School nets the nonprofit much-needed funds.

Hundreds of seventh-graders packed the Severn River Middle School cafeteria yesterday to complete a very special community service project. After conducting a walk-a-thon earlier in the school year and securing and collecting pledges, the students presented a check to the Serving People Across Neighborhoods or SPAN organization for over $4,300. "You all should be very proud of yourselves," said Linda Rzepkowski, seventh grade language arts teacher and coordinator for the project. "This money will do amazing things for our friends and neighbors who are really struggling right now." SPAN is an ecumenical church-sponsored ministry that helps to meet the growing demand for emergency help for local families in the Severna Park and Broadneck …
