Green Hornets Open Rugby Registration

For those interested in learning rugby, the Green Hornets is registering for summer now.

For boys and girls looking for a new sport to try this summer, registration is now open for Green Hornets summer rugby at Kinder Farm Park. Practice starts on June 5 with matches beginning the weekend of June 16. The games are played in June and July with a tournament the weekend of July 28 at Freedom Park in Sykesville, MD. No prior rugby experience is necessary. Soccer cleats are required. The games, held on Saturday mornings, run 40 minutes (four quarters) with seven players on a side. All players will have the opportunity to play. According to the website, the age groups are U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15. This year, the league is allowing girls only ages 15 and 16, to participate in the U-15 age group (experimental), said coach Pete Freeman…

This sport is great for Severna Park families with kids 7 - 16. Green Hornets Rugby is co-ed and two-hand touch. All age groups practice at the same time and games are Saturdays and age groups play games at the same field right after each other.   more ›

Fearless in the Goal and on the Field

In Rugby, Severna Park's Hope Wasserman has found a sport as tough as she is.

The first time I ever saw Hope Wasserman she was eight years old and playing goalie for the Green Hornet’s Twisters. She wasn't the tallest girl on the team, nor was she the broadest. But she had the most important quality needed in a goalie - fearlessness.  Hope showed absolutely no fear, whether the ball was heading at top speed in a direct line towards her or whether it was being followed by another player heading straight for her. That same year, Hope started playing rugby through the Green Hornets touch rugby program.  And though she still plays soccer, batting the balls out of the air and protecting that goal with all that she has, rugby seems to have stolen her heart.
