Plungefest 2013 Raises More than $2 Million for Special Olympics

Severna Park Middle schoolers surpassed their team fundraising goal.

Hundreds of frigid Marylanders plunged into the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday morning for a good cause—more than $2 million was raised for Special Olympics Maryland. More than 12,000 people participated in the 17th annual Plungefest at Sandy Point State Park on Saturday. Among the plungers not in the water this year was Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, according to The Capital. It was the second year running that Flacco opted out of the annual plunging fundraiser. Of course, he's hot on the heels of the Super Bowl, so Marylanders may cut him some slack. SPMS Student Government Will Take the Plunge on Frigid Friday

The team is just shy of its goal, but has more than enough members to plunge.

The Severna Park Middle School student government association has organized a team for the Frigid Friday Cool Schools Polar Bear Plunge, which kicks off at noon on Friday, Feb. 1. The team has been raising money through fundraisers such as candy grams before Christmas, and a penny war. The team's goal is $5000, and general donations to the team can be made online at the official plungefest website. The team is just shy of its $5,000 goal, but has more than enough members to plunge. Show some local support and help them surpass the goal before their plunge date! The 17th-annual Plungefest kicks off Saturday afternoon at Sandy Point State Park in Broadneck. Anne Arundel County students are set to plunge the following Friday, Feb. 1. Money …
