Police Continue Traffic Campaign After Streak of Deadly Collisions

Anne Arundel County police are executing a plan designed to decrease traffic injuries and fatalities.

Police across the state of Maryland are looking to take drunk drivers off the road as people celebrate the New Year. The holiday is annually one of the worst days of the year for drunk driving arrests. The effort comes less than a month after a hit-and-run accident on I-97 that killed a 50-year-old Millersville man. Wilmer R. Borgmann III, was ejected from his truck after a crash and was then struck by a vehicle that left the scene, according to police. Police are still searching for the driver. This year, Anne Arundel County had a devastating stretch of crashes that left five pedestrians dead and two more seriously injured in 40 days. Being Proactive for Safety When Riding or Walking

With eight pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the county already this year, it is more important than ever to be proactive about road safety.

I seldom pull out my soapbox, but when I do it is for one reason and one reason only—safety. So far this year eight people have died in Anne Arundel County after being struck by a vehicle. Though I believe that drivers have a responsibility to watch for cyclists and pedestrians, I am a firm believer in being proactive when it comes to safety. As pedestrians, there are several steps we can take to insure our safety: As cyclists, it is even more important to be proactive. I have said it before, but there are no drivers, other than fellow cyclists, who like cyclists. We are a nuisance and as such we are a target. I live by your words and it has ensured that I lived to write this comment. I have had a bicycle helmet do its job in two instances; one of those times the helmet was destroyed. Walkers should go to a sporting goods store and invest in a light weight high visibility vest in addition to the tips you offered. I have and I use it religiously.
