Big Bean Announces Oscar Winners

The two customers who guessed the highest number of correct Academy Awards winners received gift certificates.

The winners of the Academy Awards may have all been announced last night, but The Big Bean has one more announcement to make—the winners of its Oscar competition. Last week, the coffee shop asked customers to cast ballots picking who they thought would win each Oscar. On Monday morning, owner Deb Hoffman announced the winners. "We have two contestants who tied," Hoffman said. "The winners are Annalise Dietz and Jake Binstock, congratulations to both of them." Both of the winners received $30 gift cards to The Big Bean. The Severna Park area has reason to celebrate the winner for best picture—the film Argo took home the honor. The political thriller hits very close to home for 22-year Severna Park resident Lee Schatz, who was one of the six…

Big Bean Hosts Oscar Competition

All ballot entries are due to The Big Bean by 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Think you know who is going to win big in this year’s Academy Awards? The Big Bean is putting your film knowledge to the test in its annual contest. The local coffee shop is asking you to fill out a ballot with your projected Oscar winners. The entry that has the highest number of correct guesses will win a $30 gift card to The Big Bean. “It’s just a fun thing we do every year,” said Big Bean owner Deb Hoffman. “Since February is a long, cold and boring month it is fun to have something different like the contest here.” While Hoffman herself wasn’t sure who some of the winners would be, she did say they were a bit biased in hoping Argo takes home the award for best picture. The political-thriller hits home for Severna Park. Lee Schatz, an …

‘Argo’ Wins Golden Globe, Nominated for Oscar

Lee Schatz, a resident of Severna Park for 22 years, was one of the six American diplomats hiding for his life during the 1979 Iranian crisis as depicted in the movie.

Argo took home a Golden Globe for best drama and Ben Affleck earned recognition for his directing of the film during Sunday night’s Golden Globes. The political thriller is also up for the Academy Awards' best picture nomination. Argo holds a special meaning for one Severna Park man. Lee Schatz, an area resident for 22 years, was one of six American diplomats hiding in the homes of Canadian diplomats in Tehran after fleeing the embassy as it was occupied by Iran. In the film, Schatz’s character is given the given the identity of Henry W. Collins, a cameraman during his escape. In October 2012, Schatz told Patch he thought the film did a great job of portraying not only the intensity of the moment but the history as well,. “I think the …

"Blue Valentine" Review

Roses are red, this film is blue.

Love in film is many things. It can be a mariachi band under a windowsill, a confession of love at New Years, a first kiss that breaks a spell, a boom box overhead, a magic carpet ride, or even a ride on the bow of the Titanic. It can also be tender, raw, and explosive.  Blue Valentine shows that like a firework, a love that burns the brightest may be set to explode in the most dazzling way. Blue Valentine follows the love story of Cindy and Dean as if it were searching for a reason that their relationship went so wrong.  The film alternates between scenes that cover a six-year gap that includes beginning and end of the couples' love for each other. When Cindy finds herself accidentally pregnant it is Dean, a working-class painter, who …

"Black Swan"

Viewing this film is a date with the sublime.

There are movies that when audiences leave the theater -  they never speak of them again. Not because the film is bad but because it is so utterly forgettable. Then there are films like Black Swan.  Viewing Black Swan is a date with the sublime.  It is a film that invites the viewer to get lost in its world, colors, thrills, and then escape from the theater electrified. Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is an innocent, virginal, ballerina whose figure is as malnourished as her mind.  Her bedroom is like a child's, with pink wallpaper, stuffed animals, and even a jewelry box that plays her to sleep to the tune of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.   The room is her prison and her mother (Barbara Hersey,) a failed ballerina with an unrelenting need to see…
