The Severna Park High girls swim team came in 14th place at the state championship on Saturday.
The Severna Park High girls and boys swim team capped its season Saturday at the state competition. The girls team finished in 14th place while the boys came in 15th at the Class 4A state swimming championships held at the University of Maryland, College Park on Saturday. Head coach Mike McTammany said two swimmers on the boys team finished in the top 10 in their respective events. Kevin Huntley placed fourth in the 200-meter IM and Bennett Bean came in sixth place in the 100-meter freestyle. McTammany also said both the girls and boys relay teams finished in the top 10. Despite falling to Annapolis in the county competition, the Severna Park High girls swim team came in first at regionals on Saturday.
The Severna Park High School girls and boys swim teams both took first place at the regional competition on Saturday in Annapolis. The boys topped Broadneck 331-292. And the girls team defeated Annapolis, who topped them in the county competition, 296-289. Here's a look at the teams top performers, according to head coach Mike McTammany. Boys: Girls The boys relay team placed first in the 200-meter medley relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay. The girls relay team placed second in the 200-meter medley and third in the 200-meter freestyle. The Severna Park High School boys and girls swim teams just finished impressive weekends at the County Championships. The boys team placed first and the girls team came in second behind Annapolis High School. Both teams will look to continue its impressive run at the Regional Championships on Saturday. “For the boys, Broadneck beat us last year so we knew it could be us or them for the boys championship," said SPHS swim coach Mike McTammany. "We have strong swimmers, support swimmers and good depth so we knew we could be top one or two. For the girls, the competition was a little more wide open." Another swim season comes to a close and Severna Park's swim coach Mike McTammany is proud of the team's effort and accomplishments.
Finishing up his fifth season as coach of the Severna Park High School swim team, coach Mike McTammany is pleased overall with the team's performance this season. McTammany said he is most proud of the way the younger swimmers developed. Of the swimmers at the state championships, six of the nine girls and five of the eight boys who competed were freshmen. Experimenting with technology this year with video sessions featuring US Swimming training videos on stroke techniques and taping swimmers at meets and in practice helped to instruct the team on improving their techniques, he said. Undefeated in the county for boys, McTammany said he’s hoping to minimize distractions and better prepare the team mentally for the bigger meets next year. …
