PHOTOS: SPHS Students Host Plunge Celebration

Despite the event being canceled, students at Severna Park High celebrated the Polar Bear Plunge in style on Friday.

Students at Severna Park High School (SPHS) didn't let a little snow and ice put too much of a damper on their Polar Bear Plunge festivities. Despite Anne Arundel County's plunge day being canceled due to weather, SPHS students hosted their own celebration at the school on Friday. After hearing the event was canceled Friday morning, school resource officer Alex Swartz went to Sandy Point State Park and picked up the sweatshirts for the students and WaWa donated lunch so they could have a "plunge party" in the cafeteria. According to Swartz, Severna Park high and middle schools combined raised more than $30,000 for Special Olympics Maryland. See more:

It is almost time for the annual Maryland State Police (MSP) Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday, for participating schools, will take place the day before the Plungefest. Severna Park High School has already begun signing up students for the Frigid Friday plunge. You can sign up to join the Falcon team or donate here. To participate in the plunge, you must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if you're younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian's written consent. It's still early but more than $356,388 has already been raised for…
