Giving Back, Linda’s Legacy, a group that provides items to the homeless, will collect supplies in Severna Park on Saturday and Sunday. The annual Christmas drive gathers donations for more than 25 homeless shelters in Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City. The group will collect supplies at Homestead Gardens in Severna Park from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday. “The whole thing is a homeless drive, and we have done it for years,” said Kim Lank, shelter coordinator. “It is like a big push to fill all 25 plus shelters. The Barracuda team of sixth-graders at Severna Park Middle School (SPMS) swam to success with their drive for donations to fill backpacks full of warm clothing for the homeless. Part of a community service project, the team has helped homeless shelters throughout the region since October by collecting food and monetary donations for Giving Back, Linda's Legacy, an annual holiday collection drive. The clothing drive also includes donated backpacks filled with warm clothing and other items to be delivered on Christmas Eve to the homeless in the area, as well as Baltimore and Washington, DC. The Giving Back organization's coat drive for the homeless will continue accepting donations at the Riva Road Farmer's Market through Friday.
Steve Anstett of Severna Park orchestrated the large donation operation under way at the Riva Road Farmer's Market in Parole with ease. He's been coordinating the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of warm-weather clothing donations for years and said this year's effort is off to a great start. You can drop off donations at the Farmer's Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. all this week through Friday. Volunteers of Giving Back Inc. will then deliver the items to 26 shelters locally and in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Christmas Eve took on a new meaning more than 30 years ago when a philanthropist named Linda Greenberg, formerly of Annapolis, gave her hat to a homeless person. From that act of generosity, decades of giving began along with a burgeoning volunteer network each holiday season, including one she founded called Giving Back Inc. now with the added moniker "Linda's Legacy" since she stepped down in 2005. Since its founding, the nonprofit organization grew each year, enveloping the community—both adults and young people—who have helped form what is today, one of the most successful Christmas homeless missions in Maryland.
