Lee Schatz was one of the six American diplomats hiding for his life during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.
If you’ve seen the movie Argo, while watching it you probably experienced an accelerated heart rate and edge of your seat suspense. Severna Park native Lee Schatz doesn’t need to see the film to experience the rush of danger—because he lived it. During the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, Schatz, who served as an agricultural attaché, was one of six American diplomats hiding in the homes of Canadian diplomats in Tehran after anti-American protesters overran the U.S. embassy. With a candid and often humorous demeanor, Schatz spoke about this time in history, and his experience to a group of 11th-grade students at The Key School Thursday afternoon. “I knew what I was getting into when I took the job,” Schatz said. “The first few months [I was in…

The two customers who guessed the highest number of correct Academy Awards winners received gift certificates.
The winners of the Academy Awards may have all been announced last night, but The Big Bean has one more announcement to make—the winners of its Oscar competition. Last week, the coffee shop asked customers to cast ballots picking who they thought would win each Oscar. On Monday morning, owner Deb Hoffman announced the winners. "We have two contestants who tied," Hoffman said. "The winners are Annalise Dietz and Jake Binstock, congratulations to both of them." Both of the winners received $30 gift cards to The Big Bean. The Severna Park area has reason to celebrate the winner for best picture—the film Argo took home the honor. The political thriller hits very close to home for 22-year Severna Park resident Lee Schatz, who was one of the six…

All ballot entries are due to The Big Bean by 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Think you know who is going to win big in this year’s Academy Awards? The Big Bean is putting your film knowledge to the test in its annual contest. The local coffee shop is asking you to fill out a ballot with your projected Oscar winners. The entry that has the highest number of correct guesses will win a $30 gift card to The Big Bean. “It’s just a fun thing we do every year,” said Big Bean owner Deb Hoffman. “Since February is a long, cold and boring month it is fun to have something different like the contest here.” While Hoffman herself wasn’t sure who some of the winners would be, she did say they were a bit biased in hoping Argo takes home the award for best picture. The political-thriller hits home for Severna Park. Lee Schatz, an …

Severna Park resident Lee Schatz said he was “caught up by the tension” in the movie Argo—but he didn’t need the dramatic tension offered by a Hollywood film. He lived it. He survived it. During the 1979 Iranian crisis, Schatz who served as an agricultural attaché, was one of six American diplomats hiding in the homes of Canadian diplomats in Tehran after fleeing the embassy as it was occupied by Iran. “I was one of the six people the CIA worked together with to get out of Iran in 1980 after the hostage crisis began in late 1979,” Schatz said. The details of the rescue are now resurfacing thanks to Argo. The thriller recounts the details of freeing of six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of Iran. The plan to rescue them involved …
