After donating a kidney to his brother, Dovell Johnson and his daughter are headed to Disney World.
Nearly five months after Severna Park Middle custodian Dovell Johnson donated a kidney to his brother he has made a full recovery. In fact, he is doing so well that he is headed to Disney World with his four-year-old daughter. “My brother called me one day and said, ‘We are going to Disney World,’” Johnson said. “I told him I didn’t have the money for that, and he said, ‘I didn’t ask you, I am telling you that you are going, and I am paying for you and your daughter.’” Johnson’s brother Rhondell Jones has many reasons to be thankful for his brother—the biggest reason perhaps is that Johnson saved Jones’ life. Severna Park Middle School custodian Dovell Johnson donated a kidney to his brother, and they are both doing well post-surgery.
More than a month after Severna Park Middle School custodian Dovell Johnson donated a kidney to save his brother’s life, both men are doing well. “I’m fine and it went wonderful,” Johnson said. “My brother is doing fine too. They kidney worked for him kind of fast. The doctors doing the follow-up say it is functioning perfectly.” Johnson, 23, donated a kidney to his brother, Rhondell Jones, on Nov. 13, and Johnson’s co-workers at Severna Park Middle School rallied around him and offered an abundance of support. When Johnson didn’t have enough sick days for his recovery time, members of the staff donated their sick days to Johnson so he would have enough time for his recovery. A Severna Park Middle School custodian will donate a kidney to his brother on Wednesday, and thanks the school for its support.
When Severna Park Middle School custodian Dovell Johnson’s brother learned he needed a kidney transplant, Johnson immediately stepped up to help. At first, he planned on donating a kidney to a stranger so his brother could get one in return. Then Johnson discovered he was a perfect match for the transplant and that his own kidney could save his brother’s life. “When it all came back and I found out I was a match the first thing I did was I called my mom,” Johnson said. “By the time I called my brother to tell him, I found out my mom was so happy she had already told him.
