Students Learn ‘Real World’ Skills at Jones Elementary

Students participated in the interview portion of the Junior Achievement BizTown program Wednesday morning.

Fourth-graders at Jones Elementary were busy Wednesday morning. They were dressed in their best attire and diligently interviewing for jobs such as mayor, reporter and CEO. The students were gaining real-world interview experience thanks to a program called Junior Achievement BizTown, which teaches students about the skills they need to land a job and survive in the workplace. “JA BizTown provides work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs for students in kindergarten through high school,” said Kim Fabian, senior vice president of the junior achievement of central Maryland. 4 Severna Park Educators Named Teacher of the Year Semifinalists

A group of 52 Anne Arundel County teachers will be honored at the 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet in April.

Seventeen Anne Arundel County public educators and four private school teachers have been named semifinalists for the 2013 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year award. Of the educators nominated, five are elementary school teachers, six teach at the middle school level, five teach at the high school level, and one teaches at a special school. Furthermore, ten of the county’s 12 high school clusters are represented by semifinalists. Five Severna Park Teachers to be Honored at Banquet

The 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet will honor 48 public school teachers and four private school teachers.

Five teachers from Severna Park schools are among 48 teachers to be honored at the 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet in April. At the conclusion of the banquet, the winners for Teacher of the Year will be announced. On April 29, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the accomplishments of the areas top educators at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum. According to a press release, the event will also honor local businesses that have forged critical partnerships with schools across the county, directly benefiting 77,000 students who attend AACPS. O’Malley Celebrates No. 1 at Jones Elementary

Gov. Martin O’Malley visited Jones Elementary Thursday afternoon to celebrate Maryland public school’s No. 1 ranking.

Gov. Martin O’Malley and other state and local officials celebrated Maryland public school’s top ranking at Jones Elementary School on Thursday afternoon. Maryland’s public schools was certified Thursday as No. 1 in the nation for the fifth straight year by Education Week Magazine. Cynthia, don't forget the $$$ that gets poured into the schools. That number figures into the ranking. Not that we really get our money's worth. P.G. County parents should be incensed though….the highest per capita income for a minority-majority county and their schools rank 23rd or 24th in the state out of 25 school systems. O'Malley To Visit Jones Elementary Thursday

Gov. Martin O’Malley and other state officials will visit Jones Elementary School in Severna Park to discuss success in Maryland's public schools.

Jones Elementary School will get a visit from Gov. Martin O'Malley on Thursday afternoon. O'Malley is set to visit the Severna Park school to celebrate Maryland’s public schools being certified Thursday as No. 1 in the nation for the fifth straight year by Education Week Magazine, according to a release from the Governor's Office.  O'Malley will be joined by House Speaker Michael Busch (D-Annapolis), members of the Maryland State Education Association, and other officials. The visit comes just days after O'Malley announced plans to spend $336 million on school construction projects throughout the state. Jones Elementary Parents Concerned About Overcrowded Classrooms

The PTA has taken to the Internet to spread the word on class sizes at the Severna Park school.

Hoping to avoid last-minute shuffling of teachers next September at Jones Elementary School, the PTA there is using the Internet to survey parents of current and new students to get a better handle on the likley school population for the 2012-13 school year. Last September, there was last-minute scrambling because of unexpected fluctuations in student population. A week before school started, Jones Elementary School lost a kindergarten teacher due to a 20 percent decrease in enrollment in kindergarten. At the same time, another teacher was added to the second grade, due to an increase among children in that grade. That type of juggling at the 11th hour adds chaos to an already busy time of year for staff, teachers and students. Last-minute…

Jones Elementary School Launches PTA Website

This Maryland Green School is keeping their school community in the loop with a website while saving paper and resources.

When Jones Elementary School became a certified Maryland Green School in June 2010, it was on the "to-do" list to create a website that would be the communication link among parents, teachers, and students in place of the traditional paper flyers. This fall, the Jones PTA website launched, thanks to the hard work and efforts of PTA President Bonnie Levin and CAC Chairperson and website creator Jessica Farrar. "Jessica and Bonnie have been the driving forces behind JonesPTA.com," said Principal Sara Pickens. "As a Maryland Green School, we try to be very cognizant of how much paper we use and have been working to streamline electronic means of communication."
