Arthur Murray Dance Studio Dodges Irene

Owner has past experience with flooded parking lot, took precautions.

J.R. Duncan owner of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Severna Park spent the night Saturday at his business located on Route 648 (and Ritchie Highway) knowing that the impending storm could damage his dance studio. He boarded up the windows and was pleased on Sunday that he survived with no damage. Due to an inadequate storm drain next to the parking lot, water poured into the lot on Aug. 15, bringing water up to the windows of five vehicles parked in the lot. "It has been a recurring problem," said Anton Marx, a customer of the studio who came along with his wife Charella to check on Duncan. "We've complained to the county (about the storm drain) numerous times," said Charella Marx.

Are You Covered for Storm Damage?

Maryland was spared the brunt of Irene, but some properties still had damage.

Now it's time for the cleanup. Maryland avoided a direct hit from Hurricane Irene, which means a lot of folks will be clearing tree limbs from yards and raking leaves. But some property owners may have suffered damage, whether it is to a home or vehicle. Whether your insurance will pay for repairs all depends on your coverage. Many homeowner policies even pay for tree removal from yards. But most do not cover the damages from flooding. The Maryland Insurance Administration strongly suggests that you take these steps to determine if you have coverage for hurricane damage and how to get payments. No agency is just going to write you a check. You will need to arm yourself with information and support your claim. 1.) Contact your insurance …
