Severna Park High School spring athletes are off and running.
The spring sports season is in full swing at Severna Park High School where last week the opening season match ups in lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field and gymnastics were underway. With wins from almost every Falcons team, the new season has gotten off to a good start. The Severna Park boys lacrosse team beat the South River Seahawks 5-4 in overtime over the weekend with UMBC recruit Avery Littlejohn scoring his second and the deciding goal with two minutes left in overtime play. Other goals were scored by Erik Schuh, Joseph Galdi and Tripp Fulton. When you are the sole coach of 25 athletes in a sport full of individual talent, wearing one hat is not an option.
Umme Beasley started her career as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania almost immediately after graduating from West Virginia University. After marrying Aaron Beasley, a fellow graduate from WVU and a professional football player, Coach Beasley found herself traveling from Florida to New York to Atlanta as her husband’s career progressed. Though she was able to continue coaching, she found herself primarily working with very young, entry level, club gymnasts. As a gymnastics coach at Severna Park High School, she's learned working with athletes at this level is more challenging since they are both athletes and students who have to keep up with the academics. Four national champions return from Arizona meet.
Local gymnastics team, Win Win gymnastics from Odenton, returned from the National Judges Cup in Phoenix with four National Champions. Over the course of the two-day meet in Phoenix, Jan. 7-8, the six ladies chosen to represent Maryland place seventh overall in the State Team Challenge. They brought home 19 medals, including; four gold, four silver, four bronze and seven medals ranging from fourth place to ninth place. The team of six Level 7 Junior Olympic gymnasts, ranging in age from 9 to 11 was the youngest group of girls at the competition and secured the State of Maryland’s first-time ever placement in the 21-year competition’s top 10 teams for their level. Brooke Johnson departs with her team on Thursday for Arizona aboard Southwest flight piloted by her father.
A handful of young gymnasts, including Brooke Johnson of Severna Park, will prepare for the 21st annual National Judges Cup in Phoenix next week. The team from Win-Win Gymnastics in Odenton finished in first place this past November in Level 7 at the Maryland State Judge's Invitational Meet. The team competed against 11 teams from all over Maryland, beating out the second place team by .075 points. The Win-Win team was picked by Maryland gymnastics judges to represent the state in Arizona. This is the team's first national level meet. The Judges Cup takes place Jan. 7-9.
