A total of six Anne Arundel County schools receive their first Maryland Green School certifications.
Folger McKinsey Elementary recently earned its third green school certification, and Benfield Elementary earned it's second. In addition, six Anne Arundel County schools received green school recognition for the first time. Six county schools have been added to the distinguished list of Maryland Green Schools, the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) announced on Friday. Schools that earned first-time recognition were Edgewater, Lake Shore, Overlook, and Severn elementary schools, and Annapolis and Magothy River middle schools, according to a release. Four Folger McKinsey educators were Teacher of the Year nominees and were recognized on Monday night.
Folger McKinsey Elementary School was represented loudly, proudly and frequently at the 27th Annual Excellence in Education Awards banquet held at the BWI Marriott Hotel. Of the 52 Teacher of the Year nominees recognized on Monday, four came from Folger. “It was very exciting,” said Folger McKinsey Principal Susan Bachmann. “We have a wonderful staff here at this school. The PTO works with me on deciding how we are going to celebrate the fact that we have so many wonderful staff and couldn’t come up with just one name.” When deciding who to nominate, Bachmann said the same four names kept coming up and she and the PTO decided they shouldn’t pick just one. “Parents kept saying what a wonderful teacher they have been and what an impact they …

Folger McKinsey Elementary is celebrating Read Across America Day in style on Friday. The school will have numerous guest readers and different celebrations throughout the day. "At Folger, we are celebrating by inviting guest readers to come into each classroom and share their love of reading with our students," said PTO member and parent Valerie Smith. Folger will also host a contest during the morning announcements on Friday. A passage from a well-known Dr. Seuss book will be read to students, and if they correctly identify the title, they will be entered into a raffle for prizes. The following guests are scheduled to stop by Folger on Friday to celebrate: The festivities are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

The 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet will honor 48 public school teachers and four private school teachers.
Five teachers from Severna Park schools are among 48 teachers to be honored at the 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet in April. At the conclusion of the banquet, the winners for Teacher of the Year will be announced. On April 29, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the accomplishments of the areas top educators at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum. According to a press release, the event will also honor local businesses that have forged critical partnerships with schools across the county, directly benefiting 77,000 students who attend AACPS. Despite some rain, many area residents came out to the Severna Park Chamber for the tree lighting and the festivities that followed at Park Plaza on Friday night. During the tree lighting, Severna Park Elementary sang a number of holiday songs and local girl scout troops provided cookies. Bruster’s was also there serving up samples of ice cream. The celebration continued in the Park Plaza shopping center as the Severna Park High jazz band and Folger McKinsey chorus performed, along with other local groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance. The pair rode in on a horse-drawn carriage and posed for pictures with children who had been lined up all night. With the warm weather, it may not feel like Christmas outside, but the holiday season has arrived and the town of Severna Park is ready to celebrate. The annual lighting of the tree and caroling in Park Plaza will take place on Friday night. “Santa will be coming to town in a horse drawn carriage and we will have various performing groups from Anne Arundel County Schools singing carols and performing,” said Music and Arts manager Greg Bell. “It should be a good time and lots of fun.” Two local schools in particular will be participating in the festivities.
