Report on County's Needs Shows Concern for Obesity

"Two-thirds of our county is either overweight or obese," the county's health officer said, but there are several ways to get fit in Severna Park.

A state of the county report based on focus group testing concluded that the county needs to address an increasing problem dealing with obesity.  Anne Arundel County's 2012 Needs Assessment Report, titled Poverty Amongst Plenty IV, was recently released by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. A summary of the report's findings shows that population growth in Anne Arundel County has slowed since the 1970s and 1980s, with only a 10 percent increase since 2000, and obesity is growing—29 percent of all adults are obese and 38 percent are overweight. When addressing the Anne Arundel County Council in October, Health Department Officer Dr. Angela M. Wakhweya urged it to lead by example and champion a "healthy weight, as well as your …

Staying Fit in Severna Park for 2013

Many area gyms and organizations have reported an increase in the number of memberships since the New Year.

As 2013 gets underway, it appears many Severna Park residents have made it their New Year's resolution to hit the gym and get fit. Area gyms and clubs have reported an increase in gym memberships since the begining of the year. "Every gym sees an increase in participation this time of year. Everyone seems more focused on goals right now and fitness is in the top of their mind," said Sport Fit Fitness Consultant Mandy Schulz. Schultz also added that this is one of the best times to go to the gym since the weather is often unpredictable. "This is the best time of the year to be working out at the gym for several reasons," Schulz said. "It's colder outside and the sun goes down sooner so it is harder to do things outside." Spark Running Offers New 5K Training Class

The local business will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday for a New Kind of 9 to 5.

Spark Running is offering another round of its nine-week program, A New Kind of 9 to 5, aimed to help you train for a 5K. The store will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. The program is geared to non-runners or runners who have been out of practice for a while and are looking to get back into shape. Spark Running owner Caitlin Burman said the start of a New Year is a great time to get back into physical activity. “A lot of people have it as a New Years resolution and even though it is cold outside we are still going to get out there and run,” Burman said. Tuesday’s meeting will provide those interested in the program with additional information and they can also ask questions to past participants. The new session of A …

Road Sharks Take to the Trail

With the help of volunteers, a Special Olympics Cycling Team joins the Severna Park community of fitness-minded cyclists.

For Thomas Estok it took one assumption to spark an idea that would become the Road Sharks, a Special Olympics cycling team that trains in Severna Park.   “I had been working with the Special Olympics ski team when someone noticed the bicycle rack on the back of my car,” Thomas said. “They assumed it had something to do with a Special Olympics cycling program.”  That’s all it took.  The fire was lit and the Road Sharks were born.  The Road Sharks meet every Saturday beginning on April 16 at the Earleigh Heights Ranger Station.  Their season starts with a bike check-up provided by mechanics from the Bike Doctor and continues through the summer with the team participating in several rides including a century ride in Gettysburg -  finally …

Turn the Spectator Time Into Fitness Time

Spring sports offer the perfect opportunity for spectators to create a new fitness routine for themselves at Severna Park parks and the trail.

As I sit at my desk looking out at the sheet of ice still covering my deck, it is hard to believe that spring sports start in just a couple of weeks.  Sooner than any of us would like, we will find ourselves standing on the sidelines of lacrosse, baseball and the soccer fields for hours at a time.  With the busy lives that we all lead these days, the hours spent watching practices  can seem like the most unproductive part of our week. They don’t have to be.  Instead of standing around chewing the fat or listening once again to how little Suzy is just not getting the playing time she deserves, we can be using that time to get in the workouts we never find time for. Each of the fields in Severna Park, whether at Kinder Farm Park, one of the…
