Fearless in the Goal and on the Field

In Rugby, Severna Park's Hope Wasserman has found a sport as tough as she is.

The first time I ever saw Hope Wasserman she was eight years old and playing goalie for the Green Hornet’s Twisters. She wasn't the tallest girl on the team, nor was she the broadest. But she had the most important quality needed in a goalie - fearlessness.  Hope showed absolutely no fear, whether the ball was heading at top speed in a direct line towards her or whether it was being followed by another player heading straight for her. That same year, Hope started playing rugby through the Green Hornets touch rugby program.  And though she still plays soccer, batting the balls out of the air and protecting that goal with all that she has, rugby seems to have stolen her heart. Since eighth grade she's played with the Severn River Women’s …

Billy Zito Juggles It All

This Severna Park High School senior has found a way to juggle academics, leadership roles, athletics and a social life.

As the rain whipped against the windows of the Atlanta Bread Company on Saturday afternoon, Billy Zito sat across from me explaining how he juggles everything in his busy schedule. “I like the pressure,” Billy said, “It motivates me.” As Billy heads into his senior year at Severna Park High School (SPHS), pressure is something he has plenty of.   Currently fifth in his class, Billy is taking six advanced placement courses.  He belongs to the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, and Spanish Club.  He is a member of the math team, plays on a player managed and coached futsal team, is co-captain of the SPHS Falcons soccer team and captain of his elite club team, the Severna Park Rowdies.    As to how he manages the …

Opening Season Round-up

Severna Park High School spring athletes are off and running.

The spring sports season is in full swing at Severna Park High School where last  week the opening season match ups in lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field and gymnastics were underway.  With wins from almost every Falcons team, the new season has gotten off to a good start. The Severna Park boys lacrosse team beat the South River Seahawks 5-4 in overtime over the weekend with UMBC recruit Avery Littlejohn scoring his second and the deciding goal with two minutes left in overtime play.  Other goals were scored by Erik Schuh, Joseph Galdi and Tripp Fulton. In women’s lacrosse, Carin Peterson’s team found themselves in a grudge match as   the Lady Falcons played the South River Seahawks last week for the first time since losing to …

Undefeated Falcons Have High Post-Season Hopes

Teamwork and commitment led Severna Park High's swim team to an undefeated regular season.

The Severna Park Falcons Swim Team came into this season with low expectations.  Several of their star swimmers graduated last May leading everybody to believe that this would be a rebuilding year.  In an area known for producing great swimmers through the programs at SPY Aquatics, the Naval Academy Aquatic Club, and Severna Park Racquetball and Fitness Club it is anybody’s guess which swimmers will decide that the commitment to both their club team and a high school team is just too much. Luckily this year, over 15 swimmers were willing to make that commitment,  helping to lead the both the boys’ and girls’ Severna Park Falcons to an undefeated season. “I admire the desire and commitment of the kids who swim for both teams.  I appreciate …

Boys Basketball: Falcons Beat Seahawks

Severna Park defeats South River 65-53 in Friday's matchup.

It was the battle of the birds on Friday night, when the Severna Park Falcons beat the South River Seahawks 65-53. The Falcons, who were coming off of a tough 35-52 loss against Arundel on Wednesday, sought vengeance and found it as they snagged the lead early in the game and never gave it back. The Seahawks offense focused heavily on the abilities of sophomore standout Delaszo Smith who racked up a total of 26 points throughout the night, the most of any player on either team. Senior Kyle Dunn, who had been a marksman on the court with 19 points against Broadneck two days prior, was only able to put up six, the second-most on the Seahawks team. Other scoring members of the Seahawks included sophomore Kellen Brooks and freshman Danny …
