Report on County's Needs Shows Concern for Obesity

"Two-thirds of our county is either overweight or obese," the county's health officer said, but there are several ways to get fit in Severna Park.

A state of the county report based on focus group testing concluded that the county needs to address an increasing problem dealing with obesity.  Anne Arundel County's 2012 Needs Assessment Report, titled Poverty Amongst Plenty IV, was recently released by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. A summary of the report's findings shows that population growth in Anne Arundel County has slowed since the 1970s and 1980s, with only a 10 percent increase since 2000, and obesity is growing—29 percent of all adults are obese and 38 percent are overweight. Staying Fit in Severna Park for 2013

Many area gyms and organizations have reported an increase in the number of memberships since the New Year.

As 2013 gets underway, it appears many Severna Park residents have made it their New Year's resolution to hit the gym and get fit. Area gyms and clubs have reported an increase in gym memberships since the begining of the year. "Every gym sees an increase in participation this time of year. Everyone seems more focused on goals right now and fitness is in the top of their mind," said Sport Fit Fitness Consultant Mandy Schulz. Schultz also added that this is one of the best times to go to the gym since the weather is often unpredictable. "This is the best time of the year to be working out at the gym for several reasons," Schulz said. "It's colder outside and the sun goes down sooner so it is harder to do things outside." Spark Running Offers New 5K Training Class

The local business will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday for a New Kind of 9 to 5.

Spark Running is offering another round of its nine-week program, A New Kind of 9 to 5, aimed to help you train for a 5K. The store will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. The program is geared to non-runners or runners who have been out of practice for a while and are looking to get back into shape. Spark Running owner Caitlin Burman said the start of a New Year is a great time to get back into physical activity. “A lot of people have it as a New Years resolution and even though it is cold outside we are still going to get out there and run,” Burman said.
