Missy Meharg Named Division I Coach of the Year

Terrapins coach honored by National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

I met Missy Meharg as a mom.  Her son, Genya plays soccer with my son.  Before I was made aware of who she was, I would have described her as your average mom, definitely quieter than the next mom on the bench but friendly and willing to serve lasagna to the boys when the need arises. It wasn’t until Coach Dunshee told me, that I understood who this mom really is.  This unassuming soccer mom is head coach of the Maryland Terrapins field hockey team. Coach Meharg has led her team to nine ACC Championship titles, seven National Championships titles and has just been named Division I Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for the eighth time. it is nice to know that there are people out there that have these qualities that are working with young adults and children reinforcing the idea to them that "its not about just me" and there is a much bigger picture involved than theirself. One Coach - Many Hats

When you are the sole coach of 25 athletes in a sport full of individual talent, wearing one hat is not an option.

Umme Beasley started her career as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania almost immediately after graduating from West Virginia University. After marrying Aaron Beasley, a fellow graduate from WVU and a professional football player, Coach Beasley found herself traveling from Florida to New York to Atlanta as her husband’s career progressed.  Though she was able to continue coaching, she found herself primarily working with very young, entry level, club gymnasts. As a gymnastics coach at Severna Park High School, she's learned working with athletes at this level is more challenging since they are both athletes and students who have to keep up with the academics.
