In order to get a better sense of the owners and managers behind the businesses, Patch is introducing a new column. Severna Park Patch will talk with local business owners about life in Severna Park and how they got their start. This week Patch spoke with Clement Hardware owner Gordon Clement. Clement is well known around Severna Park for his generosity. Whether he is donating his time or supplies to assist Superstorm Sandy victims or helping local elementary students raise money Clement is always willing to help others. Looking to add a snowman to your holiday decorations? Consider purchasing one made by a Shipley’s Choice student at Clement Hardware. A special education class at Shipley’s, taught by Kim Chesek, has created decorative snowmen and are selling them for $10 at Clement Hardware to help raise money for their annual field day at Marley Elementary. “Each year the students participate in the Marley Invitational, which is like a field day for special education,” Chesek said. “But the cost for a bus to transport the kids was around $400, which was too much. So I needed a fundraiser to off-set the cost.” Since there are only 12 kids in the class, Chesek couldn’t ask each child to contribute, so she decided to organize a fundraiser using the kids …

The Renick family home in Severna Forest Thursday night was a sight to be seen. Spotlights illuminated a yard covered with boxes and bags, while Boy Scouts and community members sorted clothes and loaded boxes into the Clement Hardware truck. The entire effort was spurred by a common desire to help those in New Jersey impacted by Hurricane Sandy. “I can’t even express how thankful I am to everyone,” Kristen Renick said at one point in the night. “People just keep showing up with supplies and want to know what more they can do.” One man dropped off a bag of blankets. Thanks to help from Clement Hardware in Severna Park, Belvedere Elementary School was able to take supplies to New Jersey to aid Sandy victims.
After Hurricane Sandy, Belvedere Elementary teacher Kaitlin Paul decided to collect supplies and take them to her hometown of Toms River, NJ. Paul informed the staff at Belvedere of what she was doing and asked for their help—the response was overwhelming. "I sent out an email to my friends in Baltimore and I asked my principal if I could send it to the staff," Paul said. "I only had two days to collect stuff because I was leaving on Friday after work. I didn’t expect that much. But people at home brought stuff to my house and filled up my kitchen and people at work brought two bags each and I couldn’t fit it all in my car."
