The new school will offer preschool through 12th grade classes to nearly 800 students, becoming the largest independent school in Anne Arundel County.
The Severn School in Severna Park and the Chesapeake Academy in Arnold have signed an agreement to merge into one school over the summer, according to a release. The Severn School's Board of Trustees made the announcement Wednesday, saying the school will be able to retain its name, and extend its grade offerings from preschool through 12th grade. The Chesapeake Academy will be renamed to the Severn School Chesapeake Campus. “We’ve long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with Chesapeake Academy, welcoming students into our Middle School and sharing a reciprocal faculty tuition remission,” said Severn School Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “While the idea of joining forces with Chesapeake Academy is not new, the timing now is ideal.” The …

An investigation is underway at the Chesapeake Academy in Arnold, where a school worker tested positive for active tuberculosis (TB) in February. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is investigating the case, and some students and staff at the private elementary school have tested positive for TB exposure on a skin test performed either by the health department or a private physician. The school's gymnasium is the central location of the health department's contact investigation, said Dr. Kelly Sipe Russo, deputy health officer of the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. Russo said the investigative process is “dynamic, methodical and deliberate,” when zeroing in on the contact points of the carrier. She said the circle of …

Fifth-graders at the Chesapeake Academy are engaged in a project that transports their minds deep into the South Pole.
Chesapeake Academy students have been learning what it's like to live in the South Pole in a new learning project for fifth-graders. Deb Smith, an assistant teacher at Chesapeake, gives us an inside look at what's going in in the classroom. Walking down the fifth-grade hallway of Chesapeake Academy recently, you might have seen some more than unusual activity in and around the classrooms. Students submerging their hands in ice cold water with rubber gloves on? Animal whistling noises? Musical rhythm patterns and chants of snowy poetry? Penguins peeking out of doorways? Models of blue whales, leopard seals and albatross? Looking outside, the behavior seemed even more odd to observers. “One day, I saw a large group of fifth-graders standing…

Chesapeake Academy Brownie Troop 5249 collected canned goods for SPAN in nearby communities on Halloween. The girls personally delivered the donations to the food pantry in need of extra supplies this time of year.
Brownies took to the streets on Halloween in search of treats for themselves and food donations for Serving People Across Neighborhoods (SPAN) in Severna Park. A win-win situation for all, the girls really got into the spirit of giving while at the same time getting. Toting the bags brimming with canned goods was hard work, accomplished with pride and many smiles. "It was exciting to see young people embrace the fellowship of caring and giving at a young age," said troop leader Trudy Pastine. All 20 girls, first through third grade, spread the word beforehand in their individual neighborhoods and came up with the plan to work toward a community service badge while having some fun. The Millersville neighborhood of Brittingham's generous …

Severna Park's Ron Giddings among the musical instructors at performing arts camp.
This is a special time of the season when the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre continues its 12-year tradition of hosting workshops to help high school students sharpen their stage performance skills. The goal of the workships is “to give everyone an equal chance to develop skills and self-esteem while having fun in the process.” For five days starting on Aug. 1, a group of 42 teens focused their energy on honing their stage skills at Chesapeake Academy in Arnold. This intensive week was followed by a six-hour rehearsal before two evening performances for family and friends on the Annapolis Summer Garden stage on Aug. 9 and 10. This year's crop of performing arts workshop attendees hailed from Annapolis in the greatest number of 16, …

Fifth graders share their memories and lessons learned at annual event marking the 30th anniversary of the school.
There were tears, laughs, hugs and memories flowing throughout the entire graduation ceremony for the Chesapeake Academy’s Class of 2011 on Friday as students shared their thoughts about attending the school over the years. Head Master Jay Scheurle welcomed family and friends to the ceremony, reflecting on the fact that most of these students entered the building at the same time he did. “I remember you provided me artwork to decorate my office,” he told the students in his address. “I still have them today.” Pat Troy, one of the founders of the school, addressed the students, congratulating the graduates for “meeting the school’s challenges and expectations.” Members of the faculty then performed “Don’t Ever Give Up,” a touching reminder…

The school sponsors first fair to bring different cultures to students.
The families of Chesapeake Academy (CA) got to travel around the world on Saturday and didn’t even have to leave the school building. The school held their first ever Cultural Fair, bringing the foods, art, and customs of different countries to life to educate the CA community about how others live. “I wanted to enrich children’s knowledge of the world, to get them out of the bubble where they live,” said Renee Spears, parent volunteer and fair coordinator. “They will need to understand the culture of others to be global citizens." Parents and staff members volunteered their day to share their heritage from a variety of continents and countries, including Asia, Africa, India, Russia, Poland, Greece and Italy. Entertained by the musical …

A tremendous outpouring of generosity from Chesapeake Academy families yielded a record-breaking fundraiser.
Everything has been leading up to this moment: the culmination of 30 years of upstanding educational practice and many, many hours of planning from the dedicated event team. Every detail has been sorted and the Chesapeake Academy doors sat open, welcoming friends and family for the live and silent auctions, a champagne stroll down memory lane and of course, delicious food and general merriment to celebrate the Chesapeake Academy. Parent volunteers Tina Leong Schwartzberg, Sandra Welsh and Katalin F. Hlousek donated their time and creativity to make Memory Lane a reality. They wanted to celebrate the school's humble beginnings in a hair salon so they simulated a salon and provided a photo history of the school's growth over the years. They…
