Spark Running Raises $1,760 for Boston Victims

The local running shop hosted a Run for Boston on Monday evening.

Local runners rallied at Spark Running on Monday evening to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. They also raised $1,760 in the process. The running shop in Park Plaza hosted Run for Boston Monday night. Owner Caitlin Burman said the event had about 50 people in attendance, from 9 month olds in strollers to people over 65. “I think everyone was really excited to be here, and I think everyone was really excited to see so many people running,” Burman said. “It was just kind of the camaraderie of runners getting together that was nice.” Between selling Runners for Boston T-shirts, and collection donations, the event raised $1,760 for One Fund Boston, a charity organization the Boston Athletic Association has set up, Burman …

Spark Running Will Host Run for Boston

The Severn Park store will also be selling “Run for Boston” T-Shirts to benefit One Fund Boston.

Spark Running owner Caitlin Burman has spent most of her life running. She owns a store for runners in Severna Park and hosts classes and training session to help area residents looking to run 5Ks and half-marathons. Burman was not at the Boston Marathon on Monday, but between 10-15 of her customers were there. And she said she has felt the effects. “It’s been interesting as a runner,” she said. “Even though I wasn’t there it feels like this is on a personal level.” That’s why Burman and Spark Running are participating in the Independent Running Retailers Association’s (IRRA) nationwide run to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Spark Running Helps Local Woman Get Active

With help from Spark Running, Michelle Ormond went from sitting on the couch to running half-marathons in less than a year.

While going about her life and driving around Severna Park, Michelle Ormond’s day used to come to a halt when she’d have to sit in her car on McKinsey Road waiting as runners jogged past her stationary vehicle. Pretty much everyday she would sit there and wait while fit Severna Park community members tantalizingly ran past her car and continued their jog—until one day Ormond decided she was tired of sitting. “You have to make up your mind that you are tired of sitting in the car watching other people run and do it yourself,” Ormond said. “I used to hate sitting there waiting for the runners to cross at McKinsey. I was sick of feeling like I wasn’t doing anything.” Ormond, who was new to the Severna Park area, decided she wanted to get in …

Spark Running Offers New 5K Training Class

The local business will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday for a New Kind of 9 to 5.

Spark Running is offering another round of its nine-week program, A New Kind of 9 to 5, aimed to help you train for a 5K. The store will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. The program is geared to non-runners or runners who have been out of practice for a while and are looking to get back into shape. Spark Running owner Caitlin Burman said the start of a New Year is a great time to get back into physical activity. “A lot of people have it as a New Years resolution and even though it is cold outside we are still going to get out there and run,” Burman said. Patch spoke with the local store owner about running a business in Severna Park.

The town of Severna Park is full of local businesses that provide great services for the community. In order to get a better sense of the owners and managers behind the businesses, Patch is introducing a new column. Severna Park Patch will talk with local business owners about life in Severna Park and how they got their start. This week Patch spoke with Spark Running owner Caitlin Burman. Spark Running has been located in Park Plaza for just over a year now and provides shoes, clothes and running accessories. Burman went to college at the University of Miami and at first majored in marine biology. She later changed her major to communications and sports administration, which led to Spark Running.
