Q&A: Rock 'n' Roll Revival's Austin Heemstra

The Severna Park High senior appears in seven songs during Rock 'n' Roll Revival.

Rock 'n' Roll Revival XXIV at Severna Park High School kicked off March 1 to rave reviews and created all sorts of musical excitement around the school.  Patch stopped by a dress rehearsal to talk with a few members of the cast about the show, what made them want to join, and why Rock 'n' Roll is so popular at SPHS. Senior Austin Heemstra is in seven musical numbers. Severna Park Patch: What is your favorite song in the production? SPHS Student Stars in 'Legally Blonde'

Austin Heemstra, of Severna Park High School plays Emmett Forrest in the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis' production of "Legally Blonde: The Musical."

Severna Park High School’s Austin Heemstra will play a lead role in the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis' production of Legally Blonde: The Musical in January. Heemstra recently gave a tremendous performance as Jean Valjean in Severna Park High’s production of Les Misérables. And he will now take the stage for the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis in Broadneck. Broadneck High School sophomore Colleen Coleman of Arnold stars as Woods, and Heemstra plays Emmett Forrest in the student-led musical, which debuts locally on Jan. 11. The musical incarnation of the 2001 film tells the story of strong-willed sorority girl Elle Woods, who follows her college sweetheart—who has just dumped her—to Harvard Law School. SPHS Students Shine in ‘Les Mis’

The show opened on Friday night and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

When one attends a high school musical, especially one as difficult to execute as Les Misérables, some awkward moments are to be expected. There is usually a song sung off-key, a lead role that is a little weak and some miscues on stage. Overall the performance is usually well done, but it has a few problems you overlook because it is just high school kids. That is not the case when it comes to Les Misérables at Severna Park High School. The musical opened on Friday night and was so well-done parts of the show actually gave me goose bumps. Part 2: Les Mis Cast Sounds Off Before Opening Night

Les Misérables will open on Friday night at Severna Park High School.

Patch caught up with the cast of Les Misérables at Severna Park High School during tech week to ask about their favorite parts in the upcoming show. Les Mis opens at 7 p.m. on Friday and involves 75 to 80 students in the cast and crew. The show will also run on Saturday at 7 p.m. and then Nov. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance, or on the day of the performance.
