Support groups both in person and online come to the rescue in many ways for breast cancer patients and survivors.
Full support or light support – breast cancer groups offer up all sizes. Traditional support groups find participants sitting in a circle sharing stories, struggles and advice. But breast cancer patients and survivors can find comfort and help in many ways and in many places, both in person and online. Major breast cancer websites have online discussion groups where people may connect, get tips or share advice for coping with treatments and side effects. Arnold/Annapolis 2011 Relay For Life raises over $262,000 for the American Cancer Society.
According to the Arnold/Annapolis Relay For Life Event Co-Chair, Kim Gramza, the event began with high expectations. On Friday, May 13, during her opening remarks at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds to a crowd of over 1,500, Gramza challenged the group to raise $244,000 which would surpass all amounts ever raised before for this Relay. Participants met the challenge and more, raising a total of well over $262,000. According to the Arnold/Annapolis Relay For Life website, the top team fundraisers were the “Cancer Blasters” with a team total of $11,845.11. Eleven teachers and staff at SPMS surpass their goal at raising money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event that starts Friday.
Teachers and staff on the Severna Park Middle School's (SPMS) Relay For Life Team have a lot to be proud of, with a team goal to raise $1,500 for the American Cancer Society, this group of 11 teachers and staff have more than tripled that amount by raising over $4,800. Amy Hughes, a sixth grade math teacher, had a personal goal to raise $1,000 and is currently at the $1,125 mark. She credits co-captain Holly Stratton, also a math teacher, with spearheading the fundraising efforts at the school. Stratton said the SPMS team did a variety of fundraisers, such as “Ledo’s Nights” and change jars in their classroom, where students would contribute their leftover lunch money or spare change. My daughter attended with her team of 11 Magothy River Middle School 8th grade girls led by Lizzy Bentley and Brittany Beam. Between them, they raised over $4000. She had a great time, but more importantly, it really opened her eyes to the meaning behind the event.
