SPHS Football vs. Meade When: Friday, 6:30 p.m. Where: Meade High School Details: The Falcons (3-5) will face a tough Meade High School (6-2) on Friday night. Spooky Splash Jr. When: Friday, 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. Where: Severna Park Community Center Details: This Halloween swim hour will be in the therapy pool for all kids 5-and-under only. A parent must go in the water with the swimmer to participate. Cost is $8. Big Spooky Splash When: Friday, 6:30-8 p.m. Where: Severna Park Community Center Details: This event will be in the main pool and is for kids of all ages. SPHS Leadership Institute Students Hosting a Run/Walk Fundraiser

Severna Park students planning a 'Feed 10k Run/5k Walk' for Nov. 5 to benefit Haiti.

Seniors at Severna Park High School are in full swing now and for SPHS athletes Peter Lerario and Eric Giles it also means a senior project for the Leadership Institute.  Together the two are organizing a 'Feed 10k Run/5k Walk' to benefit Haiti with 10,000 meals from funds raised by participants, sponsors, food and beverage sales and individual donations. “It is a 5k to raise 10k,” Lerario said, “We need to raise a total of $2,500 in order to be able to pack 10,000 meals.” The meals are a combination of rice and beans that provide all essential nutrients and proteins and are created so they may be manipulated to work for any culture with the addition of local spices. Shipley's Choice Technology 5k Fun Run

Parents, students and teachers came together to run and have fun while helping to raise money for the school.

Shipley's Choice Elementary School PTA's Technology 5k  (SCES) is only in its second year and has already become a staple event in the neighborhood.  With the success of last year’s event, parents and teachers hoped this year’s attendance would be even better.  For months they have prepared by soliciting local businesses for prizes for the winners by soliciting Annapolis Strider’s members for help with organization and promotion of the event.  On Sunday morning, volunteers began marking the course with bright orange cones before most people had rolled out of bed.  All of their work paid off in spades.  By 8 a.m. the parking lots and fields in front of the school were teeming with kids and their parents, as well as local runners who were …

Racing with Family and Friends

Tom Bateman and his family and friends are a great example that running doesn't have to be a lonely affair.

Some people are born organizers.  Local runner Tom Bateman fits that bill perfectly.  Putting the myth of the loneliness of the long distance runner to rest once and for all, Tom seldom registers or trains for a race alone.  The moment he receives information about a race he finds interesting he begins forwarding it to his running and non-running friend a like. Several years back, he managed to get almost 15 of his friends and family to commit to running the Kelly Shamrock 5k in Baltimore.  Even before changing the race into a family fun day, the Shamrock 5k was among his top 10 races. “It is a great event because it really is more about the parade and the St. Patrick’s Day events than about running fast or being competitive,” he said. “It…
