U13 Green Hornets Soccer Appoints New ‘A’ Coach

Scott Langlois will take over as the head coach for the U13 Green Hornets “A” soccer team this year.

Scott Langlois will take over the reigns as the new head coach for the U13 Green Hornets girls soccer “A” team this year. Langlois hopes to prepare the girls for high school play.   While Langlois is not new to the Green Hornets program—he has coached soccer, football and lacrosse in the past—this is his first gig coaching soccer with the Severna Park area organization. “The U13 is an important age group,” Langlois said. “They are heading into high school and we will be preparing them for that... Longshot Oxbow Wins Preakness Stakes

Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. Former SPHS Softball Standout Named To Ithaca All-Regional Team

Freshman outfielder Paige Briganti now plays softball at Washington College.

Paige Briganti, a former Severna Park High School softball standout, was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Ithaca Region in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament that she played in with Washington College. During the tournament, Briganti batted a team-best .538 going 7-for-13  during the team's three games and her seven hits led the Shorewomen, according to Washington College. Briganti is wrapping up an impressive freshman year at Washington. She also recently earned second team All-Centennial Conference honors in a vote by the conference's head coaches. When Is the Preakness?

The 138th running of the Baltimore tradition will be held this Saturday.

We're in the final stretch before the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Here's what you need to know. When is it? The Triple Crown race will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Pimlico. NBC (WRC, WBAL) and Horse Racing Radio Network (WSPZ-AM in Washington is the only area affiliate) will have the call, which will also be streaming on the radio network's website. The first post on the day is at 10:45 a.m. Tickets? They are still available. Infield tickets are $60. Admission to the grandstand starts at $25, with box seats starting at $110. Softball: Top Ranked Falcons Upset in Second Round

The No. 1-seeded Falcons fell to Leonardtown 7-6 Monday night in Severna Park.

The top ranked Severna Park softball team ended its postseason play Monday night in the second round of the state tournament.   The No. 1-seeded Falcons fell to Leonardtown 7-6 Monday night in Severna Park. After earning a first-round bye, Severna Park entered its first game of the postseason on Monday looking to make a run to the state final, but were upset by No. 8 Leonardtown. Despite a successful season, the Severna Park softball team’s year ended with two losses. In addition to the loss to Leonardtown, the Falcons fell to Northeast High 5-6 in the county championship on May 8.

Severna Park High Lacrosse Coach Steps Down

After seven seasons, head lacrosse coach Larry Kramer announced his resignation on Friday in an email to parents.

Severna Park High School boys lacrosse head coach Larry Kramer announced his resignation on Friday in an email to parents of lacrosse players after a season tinged with some controversy. Kramer has been with Severna Park for seven seasons during which the team won two state titles. In 2010, he led the team to a perfect 20-0 season and a victory over Wootton High in the 4A/3A state final. In his email, Kramer said it was something he'd been considering for a while. “I regret that my heart is telling me it is time to move on,” Kramer wrote. “I have resigned as head coach of the Severna Park boys’ lacrosse team today May 10, 2013. Nobody has said stopping by this house was a good idea. They made a bad choice and expected to be punished. The issue is the punishment is completely out of line with anything ever handed down in the past. The issue is a lacrosse player at Arundel High School received the exact same citation and only received a 3 game suspension. Former SPHS Softball Standout Named All-Conference

Freshman outfielder Paige Briganti was named second team All-Conference at Washington College.

A former Severna Park High School softball standout is wrapping up a stellar freshman season at Washington College. Outfielder Paige Briganti earned second team All-Centennial Conference honors in a vote by the conference's head coaches, according to Washington College’s athletic website. Briganti, who graduated from Severna Park last year, is hitting .363 this season, good for second on the team, with 23 RBIs, according to a release. Her 49 hits currently ranks second on the squad.  Not only does Briganti rank top among the team in offensive numbers, she is second in the conference in sacrifices (10), sixth in hits, seventh in stolen bases (10) and eighth in runs. Girls Lacrosse: Falcons Top Chesapeake, Advance in Postseason Play

The Severna Park boys lacrosse team fell to Broadneck High School, 10-5.

The Severna Park girls lacrosse team defeated Chesapeake High on Wednesday night in the first round of the class 4A girls lacrosse playoffs. With the 17-5 victory, the Falcons will move onto the second round where they will face rival Broadneck on Friday night at the Bruins' home field in Annapolis. During the regular season, Severna Park (No. 5) fell to Broadneck (No. 4) in a close game of 9-8. Friday night’s contest should be a heated rematch between the rival schools. While the girls were successful in postseason play, the Severna Park boys lacrosse team’s season came to an end Wednesday night falling to Broadneck 10-5.

Severna Park Baseball, Softball Set for Postseason Play

The Severna Park baseball team will host Broadneck on Friday.

Postseason play for Severna Park baseball and softball will kickoff this week with the baseball team set to faceoff against rival Broadneck High School on Friday. The Falcon baseball team earned a No. 8 seed in the east region of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs and will host No. 9 Broadneck High School in the first round on Friday. On May 2, the baseball team defeated Broadneck 5-0. The winner of the Severna Park – Broadneck matchup will go on to face the No. 1 seed North Point on Monday. Brackets Set for Lacrosse Playoffs

The Severna Park girls lacrosse team will face Chesapeake High School in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

The brackets have been set and the high school lacrosse postseason will begin on Wednesday. The Severna Park girls lacrosse team earned a No. 5 seed and will host Chesapeake High School on Wednesday. The boys lacrosse team received a No. 11 seed and will travel to rival Broadneck High School on Wednesday. During the regular season, the girls lacrosse team defeated Chesapeake 11-7 behind Laura Milleker’s four-goal performance, the Capital Gazette reported. The winner of the Severna Park – Chesapeake lacrosse game will go on to face the winner of the Broadneck – Annapolis game on Friday.
