I'll Have Another Wins Another—at Preakness

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.

I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey.  “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse.  From day one, I’ve believed in him.  I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

In a comment to Paul Amirault the other day on another thread, I mentioned that the "Seer of all Things" (me) saw "I'll Have Another" winning by a nose at the Preakness. Sadly, the Seer did NOT see fit to place a bet. :))   more ›

Severna Park Tops Catonsville, 15-10, in State Semifinal

Behind a patient offense and a strong defense, Falcons beat Comets to advance to 4A/3A championship.

Friday night’s Class 4A/3A state semifinal between Catonsville and Severna Park was the classic battle between one team looking to push the tempo and aggressively attack versus the other slowing down the pace and grinding the game away. Fortunately for the Falcons, staying patient and chewing up the clock is much more effective—not to mention a lot more fun—when you’re playing with a lead for the majority of the game. After the Comets took a 5-4 advantage with 7:47 to play in the first half, Severna Park would go on to hold Catonsville scoreless for just over 14 minutes of game time, reeling off seven goals in that span to take a commanding 11-5 lead en route to a 15-10 victory. Junior midfielder Morgan Torggler paced the Falcons …

Weigh In On Orioles vs. Nationals

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.

The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

Severna Park High School tennis coach Jessica deGraffenreid Goodman reports to Patch on the recent win over Broadneck.

The Severna Park High School Falcon tennis team had a big win against Broadneck on Friday, bringing their record to 5-0. SPHS won six matches to three. "This was a heavily anticipated match by both sides, and very well attended," Jessica deGraffenreid Goodman wrote in an email to Patch. "I am so incredibly proud of these athletes."
