Finance Program Reaches Severna Park Middle

Students in Anne Arundel County are learning personal finance skills with the help of a computer program.

Severna Park students are being introduced to computer technology earlier in life than ever before, and schools in Maryland are trying to teach kids how to afford the smartphones, laptops and flatscreen televisions they want, with lessons on personal finances. In 2010, the Maryland State Department of Education started requiring schools to start providing financial education, beginning in September 2011. Each jurisdiction in the state was tasked with implementing the un-funded requirements. Junior Achievement of Central Maryland (JACMD) has helped area schools meet this new requirement, and now students in Anne Arundel County are learning how to save and spend with the computer program JA Finance Park. "It's very important for children to …

Nobody has said stopping by this house was a good idea. They made a bad choice and expected to be punished. The issue is the punishment is completely out of line with anything ever handed down in the past. The issue is a lacrosse player at Arundel High School received the exact same citation and only received a 3 game suspension. The issue is 22 students in total received citations, yet only 3 …   more ›

SPHS Not Ranked in Newsweek Poll

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday and four county schools were included in the top 2,000.

Newsweek released a ranking of top high schools in the country on Monday but Severna Park High was not one of the four county schools ranked. Newsweek ranked three high schools in Anne Arundel County among the top 1,000 in the country, and a fourth among the top 2,000. Despite recent rankings in other polls this year, Severna Park High was not on the Newsweek list. Earlier this year, Severna Park High received the second-highest marks of Anne Arundel County Schools in a Washington Post ranking of schools across the country. The school also received high marks in a national survey of the best high schools by US News. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. …

It seems like AACPS has placed the IB programs to buoy up lower-ranking schools, perhaps to draw in some of those who'd otherwise go to private schools and/or to encourage more good students to attend those schools. I think it's unlikely they'd put an IB program at SPHS without a lot of pressure. I just suspect that Newsweek is using very different criteria from WaPo and US News.   more ›
