With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.
I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey. “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse. From day one, I’ve believed in him. I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …
An article in the Maryland Gazette on Saturday reported that Brian McDevitt, the Pasadena man who died in an accident earlier this year, had alcohol in his system and was excessively speeding.
Brian McDevitt, a Pasadena man whose death earlier this year incited hundreds of passionate comments on Patch, had alcohol in his system and was excessively speeding when the car he was driving hit another car on Fort Smallwood Road, according to the Maryland Gazette. McDevitt was the co-founder of Anne Arundel Breaking News and Events, a popular local Facebook page and web page. McDevitt, 32, was traveling between 99 and 113 mph at the time of the accident and had a blood-alcohol content of between .05 and .07 percent, according to documents obtained by the Gazette. The posted speed on the portion of Fort Smallwood Road where McDevitt crashed is 50 mph and Maryland law states that a motorist can be charged with driving under the influence…

Behind a patient offense and a strong defense, Falcons beat Comets to advance to 4A/3A championship.
Friday night’s Class 4A/3A state semifinal between Catonsville and Severna Park was the classic battle between one team looking to push the tempo and aggressively attack versus the other slowing down the pace and grinding the game away. Fortunately for the Falcons, staying patient and chewing up the clock is much more effective—not to mention a lot more fun—when you’re playing with a lead for the majority of the game. After the Comets took a 5-4 advantage with 7:47 to play in the first half, Severna Park would go on to hold Catonsville scoreless for just over 14 minutes of game time, reeling off seven goals in that span to take a commanding 11-5 lead en route to a 15-10 victory. Junior midfielder Morgan Torggler paced the Falcons …
The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.
The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …
Feathers, bows and sequins, oh my!
Marjae Hicks is busy adorning Baltimore area heads with feathers, jewels, bows, sequins, flowers and all the bling that is associated with a Preakness hat. The Preakness Stakes is one of Baltimore's historical sports events, offering tradition and excitement. And big hats. According to Marjae, owner of Hats by Marjae in Westminster, MD, Preakness-worthy hats are big and whimsical and will get people talking. Locally, the Severna Park Republican Women's Club held a Preakness hat contest at their fashion show and luncheon on Wednesday. "You have to wear your hat with confidence. If you don't, it will show," Marjae said. "You have to have confidence in your hat. Even if it's the most whimsical, crazy-looking hat, it will be beautiful." Black-…
The sudden death of a Severna Park High School student prompts the formation of monthly seminars for parents of teens.
More than 500 area youth and adults gathered last Friday evening at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church for a service in memory of Tracy Vander Kolk. Family members, including Tracy's twin sister Rachel, friends, classmates and teammates participated in a remembrance of the 16-year-old Severna Park High School student. Area youth were asked to share their feelings on a post-it note which were then read by the Rev. Gene Nickol at Tracy's service on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Fields Church in Millersville. Earlier that day, the high school girls varsity lacrosse team, of which Tracy was a member, walked the field and joined parents at the field house. Since Tracy's death, a "Teens Taking Action Against Suicide" Facebook page—created locally…
