Severn School is a college-prep private middle and high school, serving boys and girls in grades 6 through 12, with small class sizes averaging 14. The school was founded in 1914 to provide academic preparation for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Douglas H. Lagarde was appointed headmaster in 2006, and is the ninth Head of School in Severn's 92 year history. Three academic buildings, four athletic fields, the Alumni Walkway, Memorial Gymnasium, the Edward St. John Athletic Center, a number of outlying buildings serving as faculty housing, the APA House, and a buildings and grounds facility sit on the property. The school offers a variety of clubs and after school activities, and has multiple JV and varsity sports teams. The tuition for the 2010-2011 school year is $21,550, and more than $1.5 million in need-based financial aid for the 2010-2011 school year was awarded.
