Volunteer Opportunities Near Severna Park

There are plenty of fundraisers and other activities that need volunteers this spring and summer, take a look.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS)

The Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) executive committee is a structured group appointed by the Board of Education that provides advice to the board on specific issues impacting educational policy, activities, and programs. The CAC has openings for three new members on its executive board.

The following seats are currently vacant: Chesapeake cluster elementary schools representative, Meade cluster elementary schools representative and one at-large representative. Those interested in a position should complete an application and forward it to Teresa Tudor, senior manager for school and family partnerships, at ttudor@aacps.org or 410-222-5410. Applications can be found on the CAC page of the AACPS website, www.aacps.org/cac.

Chesapeake Bay Trust

The Chesapeake Bay Trust announces its third year of the Chesapeake Conservation Corps initiative, a program that provides service-learning opportunities and green job training for young people through environmental and energy conservation projects. This initiative pairs young adults with organizations that provide hands-on environmental, leadership and technical training opportunities. Severn River Lions Foundation

The foundation provides vision and hearing screenings for almost all ages in ongoing programs. Members are all volunteers who provide these screenings while helping other organizations such as Partners in Care, Meals on Wheels and Rebuilding Together (e.g. manpower for building handicap ramps). Anne Arundel County Special Olympics

Anne Arundel County Special Olympics is a nonprofit organization providing sports programs to over 300 eligible athletes, ages eight to adult, with a cognitive delay or developmental disability. The program includes a variety of sports including bocce, cycling, duckpin bowling, softball, swimming, track and field; all training takes place locally and is offered to athletes free of charge. Volunteers, 16 and older, are needed as coaches in the evenings, to assist with special events, regional competitions, fundraising and more.

  •  4-8 p.m., March 31, Fun Night Fundraiser: This gala event is being held at Knights of Pythias in Annapolis features games of chance, a cake wheel, live auction, music draft beer and sodas, food from 4-6 p.m., and more. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Friday and/or to help with the event on Saturday.

The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region

The Arc advocates supports county citizens with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed to help with fundraising, and to assist in the office with special events. Volunteers, 16 years and older, are also needed as gardening assistants at the Arc’s sensory garden in Annapolis, including plant care, patio maintenance, planting trees/shrubs, etc., and to help with leaf and yard maintenance at 30 homes the Arc manages throughout the county. Volunteers are also needed for painting at the homes and yard work for all of the spring and summer at the Spa Road office.

  •  8 a.m.- 6 p.m.  May 17, 14th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser

The fundraiser is being held at The South River Golf Club, Solomon’s Island Road and includes a banquet, door prizes, silent auction and more. Bello Machre, Every Step Counts, Walk and Bike-A-Thon

Volunteer your time and talent and be a part of our growing Bello Machre family. Bello Machre provides loving homes and support to people with developmental disabilities.   • 9:30 a.m. June  9, Every Step Counts Fundraiser

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. for this one-mile walk/ five-mile bike ride fundraiser being held at Anne Arundel Community College (rain or shine).
